Have you had it in for service recently? If so, chevk the bolts on the transmission cover. Those knuckle dragging Harley Technicians have a tendency to loosen them and not re-tighten them to specs when they change the fluids. Has happened to me about 5 times since I've owned a TG and a XXX. I now go behind them and check the oil pan and transmission cover every time I get the fluids changed.

The first time I noticed it, the fluid was leaking onto the bracket that holds the pipes on (right underneath the cover) and it smelt terrible when heated up.

Shiney being 09 vintage I do my own work I changed handle bars a year ago and had to mess with clutch cable location I have probably caused my own grief doing so. just sayin. I do the service just to have the experience and knowledge to do it.

There is a rubber o ring where the clutch cable enters the housing. Sometimes the o ring degrades and causes a leak like you describe. I believe you can just replace to o ring and save the cable.

That is what I hope

I hope so but it seems dry coming out of the tranny it gets wet below the compression collar we can only take it apart and see. As we all know taking it apart means starting at the back muffler supports and working forward to the header flanges. :AGGHH: Gotta love it. fearless

Sure did

Hey Fearless, did you ever find your leak ??

It on the vinyl side of the Compression furrell, I fear it was self inflicted at time of install. Being my first time handling a clutch cable I probably not as careful as I should have been. +3" which is the length of Cross Bones cable there is no extra cable to play with for positioning in frame had me :gah:"nuts". I will be replacing it soon with I hope a +6 and pray it is not to long. A independent dealer said the fairing should really help me out. Any input would be greatly appreciated the leak is my own doing live, laugh and learn. :AGGHH:ride safely fearless

oil pan bolts ?

Hey Bubba....I'm probably missing something but what do the oil pan and trans cover bolts have to do with changing fluids ? Does HD take them off or what ?? I just take out drain plugs...Dave

My first oil change!

The bottom of old shiney was a wash in oil half the oil pan bolt I could turn with my fingers that is the ones I could reach. Yes they will loosen up if not tended to on a scheduled preventive look. I was really shocked but have learned if it can go wrong the Motor co, engineered so. gotta love the Harley's I do I think! ride safely fearless ;)
They are known to loosen up. Oil pan and other bolts if not checked that cause leaks..

Once rechecked you should be good for awhile..I know what you mean about an underside oil bath..

Well it's official

:AGGHH:I need a new clutch cable I have a +3 on now it works fine(except it leaks when tranny is full) however considering going longer. The question is how much longer??? OEM is 62 11/16 I'm looking at a +6 which gets me to 68 11/16. With the longer cable I will have more options for cable and handlebar placement. I have been given advice from an independent actually two shops, +6 is the way to go. Any and all thoughts or comments welcome. The leaking cable is my own doing at installation I'm sure. fearless

No new bars

I used a +3 cable before I was a tight fit worked great but tight. I ruined the cable putting it on my first install of a clutch cable leaked after a while. Going to replace the old +3 with a longer one in case I go with higher bars in future. ThumbUp Ride safely and often fearless

PS :AGGHH:I love the bars I have but who knows as I get older things may change, it will make going to different bars much easier then.

You got new bars on the bike? for the cable to be 6+

Have Barnett make you a new one and send the old one back to them for repair?

Mike Taylor at Barnett is a good guy and they stand behind their product.

I had them make me a new cruise control cable with roll of switch that went bad a year later. I had them make me a new one and he repaired the old for free so I have a spare.
