To All Our Vets...

Welcome for your service from a Vietnam era AirForce staff sergeant!

I'm a retired career USAF fighter pilot and a new owner of a H-D 2015 Trike. I flew missions as a forward air controller out of Vietnam and also flew the F-111 out of Thailand. I can't wait for new adventures as I tour on my new TriGlide.
I served 71-77, Lackland AFB-TI(drill instructor), Chanute AFB -machinist trainee/ machinist instructor/ Master Machinist Istructor, flight line machinist, Aberdeen Proving Grounds, USAF/USA/USMC Master Machinist instructor. As much as I tried to end up in Vietnam, my AFSC wouldn't get me there....

You'd have to have big balls to tell him to get a haircut. I'd rather try to bathe a cat than mess with a Seal. Them boys grow thier hair out and grow beards prior to deploying. I did 30 years in the Navy and I've never met anyone outside of thier community that gave a Seal grief about thier grooming standards.

If he's wearing the CMH. They have to Salute him, That one part of the Honor.ThumbUp

Actually they don't have to salute him. It's done as a courtesy only and is not required by law or regulation. Kinda like the old wives tale that a MOH receipient has a right to inspect the troops at any command he visits.

Is this something new..??.... I Might be off here,,, So if your gonna hang me... Please don't use a new rope! But I think all Veterans day should be November 11...Not a day for each war....

Here you go, Tuesday ceremony to commemorate 50th anniversary of Vietnam War

Our veterans answered our country's call and served with honor, and on March 29, 1973, the last of our troops left Vietnam. Yet, in one of the war's most profound tragedies, many of these men and women came home to be shunned or neglected -- to face treatment unbefitting their courage and a welcome unworthy of their example. We must never let this happen again. Today, we reaffirm one of our most fundamental obligations: to show all who have worn the uniform of the United States the respect and dignity they deserve, and to honor their sacrifice by serving them as well as they served us. Half a century after those helicopters swept off the ground and into the annals of history, we pay tribute to the fallen, the missing, the wounded, the millions who served, and the millions more who awaited their return. Our Nation stands stronger for their service, and on Vietnam Veterans Day, we honor their proud legacy with our deepest gratitude.

At times I get the urge all these years later. I drug an old picture of Pleiku out of the dark place those pictures are stored so I checked out on the Net Pleiku 1968/2016. What a change!

I totally understand, but on a rare occasion for me, I get this feeling I can't explain. Hope it isn't a kid from the past thinking about his father. :AGGHH:

Nope theres nothing for me to see...Rice patty's on the coast... Jungles and mountains in the highlands... My time was in the boonies AKA Indian Country, No cities just little Villages, With a few Hooch's...Drop in with Huey's Lifted out with Huey's.. I wouldn't be able to find where i was even if i had my old military Typo maps...Besides i can close my eyes any time and still see and smell that place... But i can see how some might want to go back... Just not me...
Good luck with your Quest ThumbUp

I was not able to attend, but this is one reason that I dedicate my time with Patriot Guard, I never want a warrior feel like I did when I stepped off that "Freedom Bird" and was told to hide my uniform. How much pride can you have in your country?

I agree, but in 1974, Nixon declared March 29 as "Vietnam Veterans Day."

Hey, if you ain't working, you ain't working. Something tells me that you've paid MORE than your fair share into the unemployment barrel in your working life.

In 8 years, when the good ol' U.S. gov't forces me to retire at 57 (I'm law enforcement, and I would much prefer to work on until 62), I have every plan on collecting unemployment for however long they'll let me. I can't collect social security (such as it is) until I'm 62, and can't draw from my 401k until I'm 59-1/2, so I'm hoping they won't close that loophole in the next 8 years.

I've heard that it's getting harder and harder to collect that way, but I'm going to give it a shot. It'll be hard being forced out the door to only collect 38% of my base pay when I do. Not saying that I have a right to collect unemployment, but I've never collected it in my work history. I've always had some sort of job, even if it was something minimum wage.

And YES, I know this is way off track. Sorry. :D

Scott, Fuzzy, your not off base , I worked every week for some 40 yrs. Never filed for unemployment . At 60 it was either get out or go postal! Asked my boss if he could lay me off. What a look I got- so he did - so after one realizes how much they contribute into the unemployment system, I did not feel guilty filing for it. Recieved it for 1.5 yrs thru extentions ect. Then filed for SS at 62. 2 pensions plus my Ira at 65. Don't feel guilty about unemployment $ , drag it out as long as you can. The government is slick. They know that nobody will be able to max out on either.

The article assumes a forty hour work week. In 8 years of service, I NEVER had a 40 hour work week.

I agree with that. I did 30 years and 24 days in the Navy and I probably saw 4 or 5 weeks of forty hour work weeks. Getting ready for deployment, I averaged seventy to eighty hour work weeks. While on deployment, I probably averaged 112 hour work weeks (6 on watch 6 off watch with 2 hours of non-watch work on either side, seven days a week).

I didn't start making decent money (what I thought I was worth) until I made Master Chief.

Off Track-Who Cares

Man, I understand. I did 8 military followed by 25 civil service, CSRS. I retired at 50 and now I'm a semi-suit with a security company. It's really not about the money, I just have to work. Very hard not to-self supporting since age 12, often supporting others as well. How do you go from full time to full stop? I gotta figure it out someday, I'm 59 now. Maybe riding will help encourage me to slow down.

I don't have a problem with burger flippers making 15 bucks an hr. Hell, that's still poverty wages. The real problem is our governments paying peanut wages to our military personnel. They deserve a hell of a lot more.
