Wearing a Helmet on Your Trike

I always wear a helmet, no matter the state, whether on 2 or 3 wheels. It's too easy to want to relax on the trike, but if there's an accident, it's still going to hurt. ATGATT

I live in California where it is mandatory that we wear a Helmet at all times on nearly any ride on thingy. Two wheels or three wheels, 1300cc motorcycles or 26cc stand up scooters. But....I would choose to wear a Helmet even it it was not the Law because I value the contents of my head. I have seen first hand what can happen when a head makes contact with asphalt or cement, even at very low speeds.

When my daughter was about 6 she got a concussion when she fell while learning to rollerblade, and she was wearing a Helmet. A local boy died when he jumped out into the street on a Razor scooter and was hit by a slow moving car driven by a neighbor who was also his soccer coach. He was not wearing a helmet.

The chances of us falling off of a Trike are probably less than while riding a two wheeled motorcycle. But we can still crash into or be hit by people in cars and trucks or by animals.

A Helmet is like a fire extinguisher or seat belts. Things that we have and use, even if we do not like to use them. Things that we will most likely never need because the truth is the vast majority of us will go through life and never need the protection of a Helmet, or need to use a fire extinguisher. Never get into an accident and need our seat belts. But we still have these things and use them because if we did not have them and ever really did need them....the consequences far outweigh the inconvenience.
My 2 cents.

I do believe in a helmet but was told by a Harley rider once that wearing a
helmet for protection is like having a peeing section in a swimming pool...............

Another who never wears a helmet said if he was ever in the big one, he don't
want to live having a full brain and a powerless body from the neck down.

 Everyone looks at this differently I guess.

I always wear a helmet, two wheels or three. Spent too many years as a volunteer FF/EMT and saw first hand what not wearing a helmet does when things go bad (even a shorty is better than none).

And my helmet saved what little I have in my head (LOL) this past Memorial Day weekend when I ended up on the road the hard way.

I'm in a helmet state, But even if not i would still wear one.. 3/4 With a shield in the summer and a full face in the winter.... I can't count how many times an object fly's up and bounces off the shield especially when riding on a highway...But i do see quite a few riders in PA. helmet-less. Maybe the shield on a helmet attracts objects.....;):D

Having been in a serious accident not wearing a helmet, I most adamantly recommend one. Due to the way I hit, I'm not convinced a helmet would have prevented very much of the facial damage I suffered. Two surgeries so far and one more to go and still I won't look the same. Don't take a chance.

I have rode some in national parks and on some back roads in states that did not require them and felt safe. I would not want to be on the super slab or in heavy city traffic without one. Personally I don't have an issue with it but my state requires it and I usually wear a shorty during the summer.

The Misses and I choose to wear our helmets at all times, it gets pretty toasty down here in Florida in the summer but our 1/2 helmets help with that. We just bought new modular ones for this crappy winter we're having, after living here for 15 years, it doesn't take much for us to get cold any more.

I am in a state which helmets are not required. I always wear one; shorty for the summer & full face for the winter. Will wear the full face if I am doing mostly highway travel. Being hard down twice and sliding I know what leather and a helmet will take. Last time they estimated that I sled 150 ft after T boned a car that failed to stop at the light. Wore that helmet down to the inner layer underneath the hard plastic. Even though I have a thick skull, I don't think it would stand up to it. Just my $0.02

Got several, one for Touring, so I can hear the tunes, and one for local runs. Plus it keeps the sun off my bald head. I hate sunburn  bugs, rocks, and birds really hurt !

Rode mostly without a helmet, then moved to Missouri which is a helmet mandatory state. Didn't really have a place to store a helmet when riding in freedom of choice states, and we got intercoms on the trike. Our current intercoms are wireless on Bluetooth, and also connect with our phones for music and even calls. Both of these led to full time helmet use, and over time we just got used to wearing them, so now they are worn whenever we ride.

Do you feel saver (less incline) to wear a helmet riding a trike over wearing one on two wheels?

I'm here in Florida for the winter and Florida doesn't have a helmet law and I see many
trike riders without a helmet.

I do wear a helmet all the time since my last accident about 10 years ago. I had 2 facial fractures by the way.

Technically Florida does indeed have a helmet law. Its just unenforceable.
Since there is no medical coverage given by the auto insurance industry in Florida for cyclists.. You must have a personal private medical policy to NOT wear a helmet.
Under 18 you must wear a helmet and protective glasses. The tag on the bike even says under 21 on it.
Over 21 glasses and helmet too, unless you have the private policy.
With Obamacare I guess in theory one is now covered??
By the way it is a $35 ticket for not complying soooooooo. Cops can, but wont pull anyone over just for that.
Although legally.........they have just cause.

Also its perfectly legal here to have no insurance at all to ride a motorcycle. Its not mandatory .
Aint it Greeeeeat in the Sunshine State?????

I still have that Bell Star 120 FF fiberglass shell helmet that was state of the art in the mid '70s which was on my head when I had that "70mph get-off" in 1977 and went for a tumble head over heals. I've never had it on my head since that day, but I kept it in a box to remind me that if not for that helmet I'd maybe not have a lower jaw, face, maybe not even life itself.

I wear a helmet on both 2 and 3 wheels, always a FF on 2 and almost always on 3. Sometimes when really hot, I'll wear a modular FF or a 3/4 on the trike.
When running the snowblower or when pushing snow with the Wheelhorse, I will sometimes wear a FF with shield. ;)

It didn't make sense to him either .... he just heard it and thought it sounded cool to his simple brain so he adopted the saying. It's like those who wear a big sticker on their helmet .... "Helmet Laws Suck" .... and it was kind of fun in a small way to take those helmets with me to the hospital in a few cases to return it.

With out a functioning brain how is the key inserted into the ignition or the leg lifted to the kick starter? I would say the most important control on the machine should be protected and preserved to ride another day.

I always wear one. Been down 3 times on a two wheeler, 1st wasn't bad 2nd and 3rd ones hurt. If not for my helmet on 2nd and 3rd fall I'd of cracked my head, my helmets took the crack instead of my head. Now I ride a trike I still wear a helmet. Wear it, you'll be happy you were if anything happens.

No matter how skilled or invulnerable of a rider we might think we are, we are rarely the only person on any given road. It is those other drivers, that our skill has no control over. We can ride a trike as a parapaligic, or even with a missing limb. But as Retired Army commented, the most important and most vulnerable component on a bike is the contents of our head.
Choose 'Sanity over Vanity' and wear a Helmet.

I don't agree with helmet laws, I think it should be a personal risk choice. I think it's more about insurance company's saving money, than big brothers concern for our safety.
Now, with that said, I always wear a helmet, and always have. I believe everyone should,
but it's not my place to preach to others on what they "should" do.
Back in 77 I was behind a little "old" lady (likely about the age I am now) in a station wagon. Some slinky little blonde on the sidewalk yelled and waved at about the same time the little old lady slammed on the brakes to avoid a dog. I, watching the blonde, and not the station wagon, proceeded to embed my KZ 650 into the back of said station wagon. I did a good impersonation of Superman over the handlebars, face first into the rear windshield. Cracked knee cap, and skinned knuckles. I was wearing a full face helmet, if I hadn't been, I doubt if I'd have a face now.
The bitch of the thing is, it turned out the blonde wasn't even waving at me.

Texas had required helmet laws for several years then finally stopped.
When they stopped I put my cap on backwards and took off around the Fort Davis/Alpine area ONE weekend. LOVED it !!!!

AND THEN...

That creepy little voice that comes from no-where started whispering about how stupid that was and how much you're going to hurt - IF - and, worst of all ----- how EVERYBODY is going to point at me, shake their heads, and say = "I told you so.."

Helmet stays on - EVERY trip since then.

Plus - the full-face, very dark shield has kept the sun from doing its damage and possibly prevented skin cancer.

It even came in handy in a hail storm one day when I had to walk across the back yard from the house to the storage shed.
