Was told that the headlight switch in my friends 98 Gold wing is obsolete and should be replaced with a new one. I have never heard of anything like this before.
Have any of you ever heard of this?

Never heard of a headlight switch becoming obsolete. Hard to find... maybe. (I just replaced one on a '56 Chevy) But even the 1500 'Wing switch isn't hard to find. Most switch problems, erratic lights and/or starting problems, can be traced to the inside contacts. It's a simple job to take it apart and clean with a degreaser or nail file, recoat with dielectric grease and reinstall. I've not had any fail to not work, doing this. BUT, should that not work, broken contact or something, HDL or any Honda shop can get you one pretty quickly.

Just wondering... was it a shop that told your friend that??

I have had problems with a 1990 Goldwing switches but nothing a little WD 40 and new dielectric grease wouldn't fix. Between Honda and the salvage yards they ought to be as common as dirt.

Yes, it was a shop, but I have talked with them and found out she misunderstood what they were saying.
