Plan to make this ride soon

I am concerned about being out of cell phone coverage in Canada and Alaska. Has anyone had any experience with Satellite phones pros and cons. Kevin since I know you have been there did you use one?

Fuzzy I totally agree. Only concerned about being out of range and having a breakdown or some emergency.

We're not all Eskimos here you know. We DO have cell phones...........and coverage too. Just a little spotty in the mountains.

Its been some years since I was in Jasper. Got tired of freezing my canister and headed toward the coast.
I put my (Then) new Tour glide on the fairy in Vancouver and went out on Vancouver Island.
That was an unforgettable trip.
I didn't get to see everything I wanted and dead headed back to Victoria the next year and spent two weeks touring the island and island hopping on the ferries.

Thanks for your reply. never been to that part of Canada and did not know what to expect. I'm 72 and the friend riding with me on his Ultra is 69. Do not like the idea of being stranded some place with no way of communicating. Hope to be in Prince George in about three weeks. If you see a Red Trike and a root beer Ultra with Illinois plates give us a shout. Would like to meet you.

Just used my Verizon cell phone that was enabled for calling and data in Canada (including roaming on all Canadian cell providers). There are a LOT of places in Canada and Alaska where there is no cell service.

600 of the last 800 KM I traveled had no cell service...what's even more interesting is, the motel we stayed in last night had faster internet than my DSL back home, but there was no cell service in the town, nor within 200 km either way of the town. But the nice thing is, that if you are traveling the AlCan and the roads leading to it, even the Cassiar, you would never be stranded long without someone passing by. People traveling up here are very friendly, and generally watch out for each other.

Just yesterday, Mary and I were stopped on a road, waiting for a bear to get off the road in front of us. A truck came up, watched for a while, then went on ahead, we followed at a good distance. Once the bear ambled off the road they sped on. We took a slower pace, enjoying the scenery (and hoping for another bear ). A few miles up the road the truck had stopped and was waiting to make sure we made it thru the mountain pass ok. When they saw we had, they took off again.

Your country is so big, that some of those " little spots" will seem a sorta big to us down here in the State.

Next time- Heated jacket liner. Makes a world of difference...I have not been cold on the road since Mary talked me into getting one.

Cell coverage

Thanks Kevin.
Will not rent a satellite phone. That appeared to be expensive and a hassle. Will have our Gerbing heated liners and gloves packed.
