In Australia, the Victorian government have whacked a $50 levy on all motorcylists with the intention of increasing public awareness. Well their efforts have been miniscule to say the least... just wish we had an initiative like that here.

Awesome commercial! We need more awareness here I hope the thought catches on. I want one like the "AMY" light for my bike.

Our government levies the fee and then uses some of the money elsewhere.

We've had a rash of motorcycle accidents lately. Including several Metro Motor Officers. Just MAYBE this will find a sympathetic audience within the PD. The stats on the accidents have been 95% NOT motorcyclists' fault. One of the HOG chapter's Road Captains got clobered by some idiot pulling a U turn in a School Zone! Luckily, he wasn't hurt, but his bike is a mess. The cage's insurance is fighting it saying it was the bikes fault even though Metro threw the book at the cage driver.

Ah ahh, so it's no different in the States... we have a very similar problem in Oz where the M/C seems ALWAYS to get the blame. That's one of the reasons our government saw fit to bang a $50 levy on all motorcyclists. We did protest rides, campaigned, etc., all to no avail.

I love it!! Wish they'd do something like that here!!

Puff, it's the same here, with trucks too - if there's an accident involving a tractor trailer most "assume" it's the trucker's fault when in reality it's usually the cager's. :( Drives me batty (married to a trucker - can you tell? ;))

I have always manetaend that ninty five per cent of motorcycle accidents are the motor cycle accidents are the motor cycle drivers own fault.
You may ask why I say that.It is true you can not do much about getting rear ended are having a big animal jump out in front of you,but too mahy riders get complaycint and forget the question WHAT.By that I mean what is the other driver going to do.As a motorcycle rider you can not be paying attenion ninty per cent of the time are even a hundred per cent of the time but a hundred and ten per cent of the time.
I going on seventy years old and have been riding since I was fourteen, while I have had a few real close calls,I have never had a accident.Does luck have something to do with it,yes, and maybe some day my luck will run out,but I honestly feel like paying attenion and thinking ahead has helped a lot.
There is a old saying ,on a mans head stone he had the right away. That is never more true then on a motorcycle.
Ride safe and remember the word What!

I would like to add that we can be our own worst enemy when we drive aggressively. we lower our chances of seeing that poor move by the cager.

Sadly, I have to agree, don't know about the 95% tho... I too have had many close calls, but because I always (well nearly always:blush:) ride within my limits, I have time to avoid errant drivers. Don't know how many times mates of mine have T-boned a car that's doing a U-turn or crossing an intersection, almost every time the M/C was using excessive speed at the wrong time.

When my son and daughter followed in my footsteps, I continually remind them to be 'on the lookout' 100% of the time, you simply cannot afford to relax your concentration when in a built up area.
