Master Card - where did they go ?

Not knowing much about the credit card business, other than using them, I'm in a quandary. Over the past several months I've had three different credit card institutions, that I have a MasterCard with, void my MC and issue me a new Visa card. ??????

Shop a lot a Sam's Club and guess doesn't accept Visa.

Sam's membership card is not a mastercard. Sam's mastercard is a membership card. They still have membership cards only. The Sam's mastercard is the best thing going. They offer 5% cash back on any gas purchase anywhere. They offer 3% cash back on dining and travel purchased anywhere. They offer 1% cash back on all other purchases. Much better then Discover. No rotating sigh ups and places to shop. Better than "What's in your wallet". You never have to shop at Sam's or have one near you. No annual fee. Only caveat is cash back is once a year. Good little savings account. I got $23.00 back on my first months bill. I us it for everything. Debit card is for cash only. No, I don't work for mastercard or Sam's (pay the bill in full every month and save even more.) epper:epper:epper:

Well, missed the point of my thread. Has nothing to do with Sam's taking MC and MC membership. Has to do with banking institutions going away from MC and issuing Visa cards.

Just made reference to Sam's because they don't accept Visa.

On the Sam's Club card, ours is a regular membership - but it has more than paid for itself over the year as we both get gas at Sam's in Bentonville AR, and get the 5¢ off member price at the pump. At the Sam's in Joplin, MO, it is a members only gas station, and most of the time price there is on par with the other area gas stations.

As for the Mastercard turning into Visa, that is in the "Yeah, that happens." catagory. It seems sometimes the issuing bank gets a better deal for them from the cridit card company, so they switch. We have had Visa turn to Mastercard and Mastercard turn into Visa from the same bank over the years. Sometimes we have had a card stay the same brand, but the bank has changed, or a store Visa or Mastercard has turned into a bank card. I'm sure there is money being made - If Wells Fargo, Chase or Citibank can save .05¢ on every credit card transaction you can be sure they are making bank.

The answer is $$$$$$. Some places don't take American
express. Others don't take Discover. Fee's are too high. Never heard anyone not taking Visa or Mastercard.

I use Capital 1 the most and it's still a Mastercard.

Texan, Yours is a good question. I had my only credit card, a Master card switched to a Visa without my asking. I just figured Visa gave my company a slightly better rate to get them to switch. This happened about 10-12 years ago, way before it was as popular as it is today.
