Don't know if this is a new scam or not, but it's new to Ma and me. Ma bought a couple of gift cards for our kids and when the kids tried to use them they showed zero balance. Our SIL that's fairly savvy with this kind of stuff noticed the numbers on the back of the card had already been scratched off.If you're going to buy a gift card for someone check to make sure the back side of the card is unmolested.

Sorry it happened to you. Scam has been around for a while. The thief records the numbers and then wait for them to be activated when purchased.

I might suggest you go back to the store and tell them what happened. If you purchased the cards by using your credit card, you can also file a dispute.

Good luck
