Never had a problem with it, used it yesterday but today, trike started right up when I pressed the reverse button, the light lit but when I pressed the arrow it made a horrible grinding noise and a loud click...they had to pick it up, so now I wait to hear the bad news $$$$ Ugh..anyone else had this issue?

Yep, Sometimes the reverse motor hangs up on the ring gear, Happen on my 11 T/G a few times, I just rocked the Trike back and forth to free it, The click sounds like you tripped the breaker switch under the seat' right side....
You don't want to know what a new motor costs, But i'll tell you anyway;
Around 1,300$ without labor.. I pulled mine out and had it rebuilt for 95 dollars...

Thanks Rhino........I hope that it is a minor problem...like the breaker.....I will let you know when they call to tell me!
When I first bought my Trike I had problems with the reverse gear not dis-engaging with the ring gear. I found that if I let off the reverse button in time to let the Trike roll about a foot before I put the brakes on, it let the gears slide apart & I have no sticking in reverse since.
If you move forward with the gear engaged it will take the motor out in a hurry !
By the way they are now $1400. If you are still covered by warranty things will be MUCH cheaper ! One reason for extended warranty !:Trike1:
Makes me wonder if I should go with a Champion Reverse Gear before mine goes put on me. I've had a dislike for those electrical motors since I got my first TG in 09.

Well, sadly I need a new motor for the reverse...$1500 for the motor......they said my emergency brake was on and I told them I have never even used it...so I have no idea if someone touched it or not.....he said a lot of people forget to check to see if it is off....hope they are not scamming me...I have no choice but will certainly check the brake before every ride....how does the trike keep riding and not indicate that the emergency break is on....very frustrated!
If its not under warranty I would consider the champion reverse gear over the electric motor..

I don't think that sounds correct, have you already gave them the go-ahead to do the work? If not, I would wait to hear the comments of those TT members that really KNOW the reverse system! I wish I knew the system, but I haven't worked on my TG enough to know.
Did THEY explain just how the PARKING BRAKE effected the reverse motor and just WHAT is WRONG with the motor?
Just saying that it needs a motor does not mean that it can not be repaired/rebuilt! Just ask rhino2.
At the very least I would NOT pay the dealer all that money, I would add more $$ to get a manual gear driven reverse, that is what I plan to do on my TG.
The motor can be rebuilt, But you'll have to pull the motor out [Not a big job] But if you can't do it yourself see if your dealer can/will install a Champion reverse, My dealer would have done it for about 1,700$..... But I would be very suspicious that leaving the brake on will damage the motor... The circuit breaker should have tripped before the motor burnt out... That said anything is possible.. :Shrug:

I have to call BS on the parking brake causing the motor issue, when the parking brake is on and you try to back up it trips the breaker. If it didn't trip the breaker then something isn't right with the breaker and it'll happen again.
IMO I'd install mechanical reverse or have the electric reverse motor rebuilt before I'd give HD the big dollars for a new reverse motor.

Great people they rebuilt mine while I waited [20 minutes?], Naturally you have to hand them the motor out of the trike.. Their shop is a throw back to the 50's, Which is a good thing.ThumbUp
I did ride away once with the brake on (2014) and didn't break the circuit breaker. Only went about 2 or 3 miles, but now the brake will not hold on a somewhat steep incline. I'm going back to my fail safe brake = Velcro strip around the front brake lever. Works great and for about $1.00 great price.

As the TG's get older & more miles it seems more are having problems and I thought it might help to have some reference info in one place. It could include posts with the correct info about the reverse motor problems and the contact info for the rebuilder that Rhino 2 used. I know that not everyone looks at the Sticky's first, but at least we would have a place to point them to.
I know that my long term plans are to install a manual reverse gear, but for the cost of a rebuild, I know that I will wait until the motor becomes beyond repair.

You would think so..... But sorry to say no... I talked to at least 10 Rebuilders And a few Indi HD shops and they would say try this guy maybe he can do it... Even showed them the motor no dice... Thought I was done' Then I called Middlesex and asked him if he can, He said Yes... So I asked are you sure... He said look I can't fix it over the phone and I'm too busy to talk.. Bring it in.. Man of few words, Got to love him..ThumbUp

It might not be a bad idea to have this info as a sticky, its not a matter of if the reverse motor will go, its a matter of when. What HD wants to replace it is ridiculous.
I contacted Meziere Ent. and received a reply from Don Mezeire. I got the feeling that he is not happy with anyone thinking Mezeire Ent. has anything to do with the H-D TG reverse motor. "For any issues with your reverse motor please contact your local Harley Davidson dealer." and I think that sums it up for them. :Shrug:

Many thanks to all of you for your advice and information...unfortunately I had to go ahead and order the new motor, I had no choice, I want to ride and I don't have anyone to pull the motor out for me or to check out other repair options.....guess I better start looking for a guy that can help me out with maintenance of my trike! I intend to ask the mechanic some of the questions you asked and get some answers........sorry I did not take the extended warranty!

What I'd like to ask is, since you are paying for a new motor than the old one is considered trash, after THEY explain the answers to your/our questions, I would like to get your old motor. THEY should not have any reason to not give you the old motor and I would pay you to box it up & ship it to me. I want to learn more about these motors and see if I can help with the motor problems in the future, I will PM you later.

epper:epper: Besides, I have known some females that work on bikes & cars that work circles around the guys and very smart. They were bookworms, something most guys don't like or think they need need to do. You might surprise yourself if you start reading up on bike/trike repairs, you don't need to turn the wrench yourself if you don't want to, but it will sure help to know the real answers before THEY start giving you the BS.Have fun & be safe riding and please let us know what THEY gave you for answers.:wave4:

FYI- My stealer says you can take out a ext. warr. on your '09 under certain condition/stipultions - my Wife just did her '10 and while costly it may well be worth the expense.
Seems like the reverse motors, compensators, and stators are re-occurring issues on the trikes and all expensive items!
Just my opinion -WE SURE ENJOY OUR H.D. TRIKES.........

When I took my motor apart I found that the brushes were falling apart [crumpling].
I figure that was from road salt and water, I ride all winter snow and all...
But there isn't much to the motor... Brush's/ plate and commutator that will go bad..
You could get brushes just about any ware, But ''I'' couldn't get the plate, And you would need a tack welder/brazier to put new brushes on the plate... So for 95 dollars it was smarter to let Middlesex put in new brushes with a new plate, Plus a new commutator, and while I waited...... ThumbUp

I know what your saying and I will be the first to admit that I know little about elec motors, I can fix stuff BUT, I KNOW a guy. I have known this guy since way way back in my slot car days and he is a wiz with elec motors, all he ever says is, bring it to me I'll look at it. He has fixed so many motors for me that I lost count and he is the reason I want to get hold of this motor, he has a knack for making them stronger.
