a thought about heat and airflow

excuse the dodgy drawing, but the thought is, If you put a piece of rubber or similar in the area between the tank and the rear of the forks, (the dark coloured in area) wouldnt this direct more air across the heads and aid cooling, particularly to the rear cylinder which is the one which has most of the heat issues. when riding a fair old draft comes up between this gap, even water bugs and general debris get blown up there. i realise when stationary it wont do a thing, but every bit of cooling helps, and i find that gap a bit of a pain anyway..
any thoughts??

i rotated the picture and reposted it, and its still upside down... is this a southern hemisphere conspiracy lol.
caution dont stand on head to view diagram. (unless you are a trained professional)

No problems with water cool engines. LOL
They do make blowers for cooling HD engines, I've heard, but never seen one.

Anything that helps direct air across the heads of the engine will help, especially the rear head which runs the hottest.

Oneup, You are one-up on me. I've been wanting to find something to put in the same area for a long time but for a diffent reason. Every time I get caught in the rain you know how much water gets blown up thru there if you've ridden in many storms. I'd never thought about closing that area off to air flow to add additional cooling air to the engine. But I think you're right, it probably would help cool the engine some.

Now for the disclaimer for both of us: Anything we put in that area of course has to be flexible enough to allow for complete lock to lock handle bar movement would be the only restriction I could foresee. Have you thought of anything else?

Unless I am mistaken, Dennis at TG Stuff used to make a deflector that fits right below that spot, between the forks, not the tank and forks, and I have one installed. It completely stops the air from coming over the tank and directs it over the motor. Is that what you are looking for? It works great, I have had bugs flying around between my face and the windshield because the air is so calm there...No moisture comes up thru there either when it is raining.. , but Dennis does not manf them anymore,, but I am sure he can tell us who does.

And I am not sure why you Wing guys would get on this thread and spout about why you did not buy a Harley. Try and contain yourselves,, That is not what we are discussing here.

Actually Phu Cat, i did have another thought, although its more of a question, and im sure the answer is somewhat more complicated as the science of air flow, volume, density, and air speed etc are required.
the question is..
how does closing your leg pods effect cooling??
My first thought, without a lot of thought going into it, was that closing the pods would make the engine hotter... But the more i touught i started to wonder if closing the pods actually created an area of higher preasure air in the tappered opening to the motor, and forced more air at greater speed closer to the cooling fins. must be time for another dodgy drawing.

Yes Dennis did make them, I had one on the 2010 Triglide I used to have and my dad has it on his 09. It does kill some of the air.

I've never checked to see how they would effect temps, if you wanted to experiment you could use an IR temp gun and shoot some head temps. My thoughts is closing them might raise temperatures on warm days.

If I understand this thread right, I wonder do you have the wind deflector that mounts to the bottom of your lower triple tree?

One of the reasons, I like my Wing over, sold Harley.

smiles-B_S_flag.gifWhat part of this post has to do with a gold wing?
