Trike accidents

We hear about motorcycle accidents all the time. I don't remember hearing about Trike involved accidents. How many of you have been involved. Driver error or Cager error?

I haven't had a mishap with/on a Trike [7+years now] But when i was on the Spyderlovers forum quite a few nimrods have reported they had one...

Just my opinion (we all know what that's worth ;)
I find that people tend to see/notice me more on the trike than they did before I had it converted. I rarely have drivers pull out in front of me now. I think it is due to the larger mass of the trike. That would be the logical assumption.
Now having said that, I'll probably get T-boned on tomorrows PGR mission (cross my fingers and pray not!)

I was broadsided on my trike in June this year. The guy ran a stop sign. I was badly bruised and battered, but no broken bones or any serious injury, I'm thankful to say. The trike remained upright although it ricocheted pretty fast and hard, but while my momentum pulled me off it, I was not "thrown" off as I would certainly have been on two wheels. I'm back riding on a new trike, as that one was totaled.

Since I purchased my trike last April there has been two trike accidents I've heard about on the local Houston news. One was killed when hit by a drunk during the day and one passenger was killed after being thrown from a trike after a collision on the freeway.
Recently a Goldwing rider was killed when a drunk entered the freeway going the wrong way.
There have been several crotch rocket high speed accidents and almost all of them died.
All sad events.
You got to be careful and then some anymore. There's so many idiots and drunks out there.

I live Florida where helmets are an option. I wear a full face and think I will continue to do so on the new trike. It is tempting not to but I like my face the way it is. I'll probably loose the boots and blue jeans. I feel MUCH safer on the trike. It stops upright and fast.

I too was broad sided a year ago last September but like Nana feel that being on the trike was to my benefit. Hate to think just how badly I could of been hurt if on two wheels. In my case a young driver with a learning permit "didn't see me" as he pulled out from a stop sign clipping the right rear wheel. Having had a trike now for the last 6 years has convinced me people as a rule do see you better as someone mentioned.

Oh yea my trike was totaled by the insurance company so have since replaced it last year. Anyhow I do hope I don't have any more of those "I didn't see him's".

Though it sits quite a bit lower than a conventional motortrike, mine still has a pretty good footprint, which I believe contributes to it being a lot more visible than a bike. Add that to the fact that it's louder than hell, and I feel fairly safe in most traffic situations.

I did have one near miss, which I can attribute to the cager not paying a damn bit of attention to what he was doing. In cases such as that, you're pretty much at the mercy of the idiots, no matter what you ride.

Wear what ya want, nothin like havin a choice. But, I was doin about 70mph on the freeway and a coyote came acrossed full
speed and hit me on the left side in the leg and foot. Thought my leg was broke, hurt like *ell but wasn't. Did lose the back fender
off the Trike. Glad I had the boots and jeans on.

Although I will never receive awards for being the "poster boy" for ATGATT, I would ask you to reconsider your thinking on boots and jeans - especially if the alternative is "sneaks and shorts". JMHO

I think the reason you don't "hear" about trike accidents, on the news, is because the news has no idea what they are looking at. If they go on a auto vs. motorcycle accident all they see is a brand and that is what they report it as. If the talking head sees Harley then that person is going to report a Harley motorcycle accident, not a Harley trike accident because they don't know what else to say.
So there you have my opinion on the subject.

Just to let you and most other Florida riders.
Helmets are NOT optional.
As you know Id say more then 50% don't wear a helmet on 2 or 3 wheels.
This is only legal "IF" you have a PRIVATE health insurance plan.
No private medical, you legally must wear a helmet.
Under 21 you must wear a helmet insured or not.
Also as you may or may not know.
Over 21 you don't even need to have insurance of any kind to ride a bike.
Under 21 you must have a helmet and eyeware.
Now since the fine for not wearing a helmet is all of a $35 ticket.
Its a pretty unenforceable law down here.
Can you imagine the paperwork headache for law enforcement this would be to stop every rider without a helmet and to ask for a medical card??
If law enforcement in any individual town decided to stop and issue tickets on any given day.
It would be perfectly legal to do so.
So please don't say to people its LEGAL here.
It isn't. Nor optional.

Thanks

It is optional. I chose not to type all that you did. The option is you have 10,000.00 health insurance you don't need to wear a helmet. I wear a full face modular all the time.

July 11, 2012 I totaled my one of a kind show trike in an accident all by myself (definetly not on purpose), trike totaled and I spent several months recovering from 2 surgeries to put me all back together and then lots of rest then therapy.
Survival was only possible due to all the prayers from all my TT/TOI friends and I can't thank all of you enough.

First I choose to wear everything made for protection.. My brother was on his Harley and an idiot in a NEON pulled right out in front of him, he nailed the firewall / door area at 35MPH and was thrown 65' to the pavement, yep no helmet, totaled both vehicles, CareFlighted to Hospital - coma for five weeks - now has no teeth, on disability as it also took the use of his right arm and spent 7 months in therapy before he could use anything else.
I did capture a couple of photos 1 trike / went to hospital broken arm and all skint up, the other is a 2 wheeler that walked away but 5000.00 worth of damage to the bike.

Yes well before we start patting ourselves on the back for having such a large footprint just remember that cars run into each other all the time and cars run into semi trucks and trains. We still need to be very careful and very observent as we ride.

Must ask...

Hubby and I just started riding again July 31st. 9 days later we're knocked off at 50 mph by a deer. Both sustained broken right leg or ankle. Both require surgery. Hubby is recovering, I'm postponed now 5 wks due tti diabetes and aspiration pneumonia issues. We're both here definitely by the grace of God. We will ride again as it's so enjoyable but this has obviously made me nervous. Insurance company hasn't decided on repair or totaling of our beautiful 2003 goldwing. I've been trying to research if we'd be safer off a goldwing trike. You were on one and stained pretty nasty injuries similar to us. What exactly happened that you sustained these injuries??
