New to me HD Trike - Couple of Questions

Sold my 99 Softail last month as my knees are shot and been looking for HD trike. Found one two days ago at an estate auction. A 2010 with 39,210 kms, runs great. First thing was to order an owners and HD repair manuals, which will take 2 weeks to get.

A couple of questions:

- how do I engage the reverse?

- how do I engage the parking brake?

I have the same year. For reverse, you must be in neutral. First activate reverse ability with top button near thumb. If dark, you will see a dim yellow light come on. Next you press and hold button under that to backup. Note that you made need to be revving the throttle a little. The backup motor takes a lot of electric. Also note that if it is original, there is a breaker behind right center panel that likes tripping.

Emergency/parking brake is that handle on right side in front of rear fender. The end can be adjusted. Note theys brake sucks.

Don't expect alot.

Push down handle for parking brake to engage..remember to lift back up to disengage parking brake. the brake is use less after awhile. some have issues with the breaker tripping some do not..make sure you stop put in neutral push the button on the handlebar with the "R" then the arrow and steer while pushing the button while you are going reverse. Keep in mind it does take alot of battery and your charging system to run the reverse. DO NOT RUN for long distance..

Take your time and have fun..

for the eng you can use spectro, red line, or ams oil, i suggest red line motorcycle gear lube for the tranny. remember syn 3 is waaayy too thin for the tranny.

Using Amsoil in all 3 holes. Been using amsoil for years in my 99 Softail.

Found the drain plug for the primary and tranny, where's the drain plug for the engine oil and what's the amount of fluids per hole?

The drain is on the left side coming out toward the front. There will be to plugs side by side. Just use the one that takes a 5/8 socket the other is for the dry sump. I put in 31/2 quarts of oil to keep from getting oil blowing out the filter. For the tranny 1 quart and primary I think is 40 oz.

One plug is horizontal and the other is vertical. both within a few inches of each other.

Amsoil works great been using it for years..

check your brake pads front and rear..rear rotors too..you will see why unless they already repalced them and the rotors for the rear..

Got all the fluids changes, new oil filter, new air filter, new spark plugs and now onto the reverse.

No response from the controls pulled the right side cover and looks like the breaker has tripped?

Push the red button to test then the lever that opens after the button is pressed push it back in and it should work..Cant tell it the lever is open in the pics..

Just wondering if you see the lite come on when you press the reverse button? then the arrow?

Welcome to my world....breaker tripped on my '13 TG last weekend on a trip. Push in the red button and right under is a "flag type" black square plastic lever that you have to PUSH IN also. And, there is nothing wrong with Syn 3 oil....been using it for years!

Greeting from Idaho!

Keep in mind breaker has been known to 1/2 trip. Once my breaker and entire reverse motor were replaced (with stronger one) it hasn't tripped again. There have been a couple of cases when backing up a hill, gear got stuck on drive. Had to be careful when leaving. Needed to rock trike to release reverse gear. You can hear it whining when it does that.

It also helps if you make it a habit to never stop in reverse under load. Always let it roll reverse after you release the button. It lets the gear retract easier.
What size breaker did they put in?

I'm on an 09 trike, wife rides an 11. Neither of us have ever popped the circuit breaker, probably because we rarely use reverse. 50 years on motorcycles taught us to LOOK before you park. We never park down hill. If the parking place slopes down, we back in. I'll be the first to admit I ate the first set of break pads. Driving with the parking break on will eat pads. After I learned to take the break off, never had a problem with killing break pads. Adjusting is very easy, I removed the set screw and replaced it with a thumb screw. Don't need any tools to adjust it.

Once done, doesn't need adjusting again for a while.

Lots of folks have complained about the rear breaks.

They are harder than our 2 wheelers were, but then again the breaks on my jeep are a lot harder than the ones on the Lincoln. On both trikes, if you slam on the pedal, you can lock up the rear wheels. You can't really compare the riding or handling of a trike to a 2 wheeler, different animals.

Good Luck.

:Agree: I don't care to Flintstone out of a parking space so I try and choose my parking space with that in mind. I did however almost hose my self a couple years ago not thinking before I parked. I parked on a down hill close to a building with my 06 Ultra, talk about a work out trying to get it back enough to pull forward and turn.
