I do know that proper antennae tuning is the most important thing in a good operating cb radio after driving trucks for almost 40 years. My question is.... Can I bring my radio into a tech to be worked on? Will they even look at this thing? I'd like to get the thing checked out and tweaked and peaked on transmit and receive. Then pick up a new antennae.

CB tech's are getting very very hard to find. Maybe we can start a list of know tech's for CB's

When I was still driving, I used this guy on Rt. 1 in Callahan, Fl. He has a website called cbradioplus.com. They had a good tech there at the time (2009) and they would also tuned your antennae's for free. I recommend these people because when you left the place they would talk to you the whole time as you were going down the road just to ensure their products worked properly. Phone number was 904-879-6141. I don't use him now because he's 3 hours from the house.

I've tuned several GL1800 antennas. It takes a couple special adapters to hook up the GL1800 CB system to a VSWR meter but it can be done. The adapters you need can be purchased at RadioShack. Here is what you need along with a good VSWR meter which you could also buy there....

Radio Shack Female Motorola type connector 274-710
Radio Shack Male Motorola type connector 274-709

Here is a pretty good artical. More information then you will need to tune stock or replacement antennas but all the info is there.. http://www.aumih.info/Tips/cbtune.html

Goldrush, I have a 98 Goldwing and the man I just purchased the trike from told me he never used the cb. I now understand why, it doesn't work for beans. The "foldover" needs to be replaced, but i figure while I'm at it I might just as well replace the whole thing since it is 15 years old.

I do have a swr meter that is an over kill, but that's me. I read the article but that was for an 1800. Will these same adapters work with the older 1500 models or did they change that? If they will work, I'll buy them ASAP and emery cloth my elbow foldover to see if i can make this fit tighter. Thanks for the heads up and the interesting web site.

I have never tuned a GL1500 system so do not know that answer. Hope someone can jump in here. If not contact the guys at Serria Electronics , Products . This place is a good source for those aftermarket antennas and the only place I know of to get the GL1500 cb worked on.

Icedad ,,, The shop is still there on US 1 .. Go by it regularly on some of our rides .. I live in Yulee ...
OK, with that said, The GL1800 CB is a sealed unit and I have searched for
the past 4 years to try and find a schematic .. Have been told that it is a fixed unit and
can not be tweaked and peaked. Same as a Yamaha Venture CB .. Sierra used to work
on the GL1500 and they do have a limited amount of tweak ability .. I do a lot of
Antenna work .. My GL1800 power out is at 3.8w, which is just under the legal limit of 4w.
So, it works pretty well. Check out (http://bludolphintravel.com/gmg/marshallmod.htm)
which is mainly for the Yamaha Venture, but is easily adapted to the Goldwing.
Have worked up a MarshallMod for the GL which changes out the OEM antenna to a
2' Firestik II tune tip antenna .. You can get the adapter from Sierra and if you do a
search on CB Antenna Fold-over you can find them on Ebay ... Right now the best
change over that I can recommend is from Sierra Electronics. Look in the GW section
and you will find a antenna kit with your choice of 3 antenna's and a fold over for about
$60 each .. Recommend the 2' model ... They come pre-tuned so your SWR should be
pretty good ..

If you are ever down Yulee way, stop in and I will be glad to tune your OEM for you
or help you put in a mod ...

The adapters we wondering about were the ones I could use to check the SWR's. Is the coax and connectors the same in gl 1500 as they are in the 1800? Goldrush had the numbers of the adapters so I could buy them and check the SWR's. I know I will probably need a new foldover and if the antennae won't adjust enough, I'll buy that setup like you suggest.
If I can't get the darn thing tuned, I might just have to take a lil trip down your way.
Thanks,
Randy

Yes, the GL1500 and GL1800 use a Motorola Plug (same as a automobile). Antenna has the
male end and radio has the female. Sierra also has the pre-made coax adapters. Basically
a PL259 and Motorola (2 cables - One has male Motorola, other has Female) connectors.
If you are good with soldering on connectors all you need to do is find a 24" RG-58
extension cable for a regular car radio, cut it in the middle and solder on a PL259 to the
bitter end (where it was cut) .. IT HAS TO BE RG-58 coax because it is 50ohm cable.
Some of these come in RG-59 coax which is 75ohm, so always look at the cable itself
and make sure it is stamped with RG-58 ... Or, get your parts and take them to a TV
repair shop. They know how to solder .. Pretty easy ..

Up the street in Stonewall is a guy who installs and radios for local LEO, VFDs, etc. Also sells and services CBs and other handhelds for local hunters., businesses, etc. I used him to tune the radios on both the Shadow and the 1100 trikes and will probably get him to do the 1500 trike's cb.<br />

Check with your local FD as to who services their radios and give 'em a holler.
