Big Blue Has a Happy Motor Now

Big Blue's motor has a very happy motor now. Most of the time, the oil temps are 270-290 degrees if the air temps are over 80 degrees. I was able to buy a Wards Force Convection System fan. It works very well. While running it in 100+ degree air temps, the oil temperature was never over 260 degrees.
Today I installed a Jagg 10-row with Fan Assist oil cooler. The oil cooler fan was hooked up per the instructions so it only comes on if the oil temp is over 205 degrees and the back brake is applied. On a 40 mile test run with air temp at 94 degrees, and running 55 and 65 mph, the oil temp never exceeded 245 degrees. During the 40 miles there were 19 stop signs or stop lights. Lot's of opportunity to heat up. At one light in the last 5 miles, the oil temperature actually dropped to 230 degrees. I've never seen an oil temperature recover or drop, ever.
Oh ya, this all is with the 50-state legal stage I tune loaded. I'll load a "rich closed-loop" tune back in and see how it goes. The advantage of keeping the cylinder heads and oil cooler is that the ECU starts to pull timing in the moderate load areas when the CHTs go over 230 degrees. The hotter the CHT gets, the more timing gets pulled. The more timing gets pulled the hotter the cylinders run and so on and so on. Didn't see any of this today or since adding the Wards FCS fans.
Will have to run a few data master logs and see what's going on with the cylinder head temperatures over the next few 100 degree days.

Man that sounds great..I just got my Wards FAn a few weeks back and just waiting for a time to install them. The quality looks real nice. I was surprised when I ordered them that there was a backlogg and the lead time was 10-12 weeks. Then I got a email that he was ready to ship..So I got mine sooner than the web site stated..

The Jagg Oil cooler sounds like it made more of a improvment..Love to here more data you collect..

I was just rechecking my tune with the Power Vision and this is what I found in regards to CHTs and spark adjustment.
I do agree whole heartedly that when I added the FCS and removed the lower tree baffle that I installed with the fork wings, my oil temps have dropped to 245*-255*. The FCS has really made the trike that much more enjoyable to ride and the EITMS never kicks in anymore. What is really surprising is to have my CHT at 270 when running on the highway and watch it drop to 255 when stuck in traffic after!

When looking at the amout of spark pulled at 572* you have to wonder how much heat were these motors designed to handle?

Wow, that table goes way up there! I am really happy with the FCS/Jagg combo. It rocks:10:

Have a question for those with the FCS fan installed.

Does much of the heat blow through to the right side when fan on?

Reason for question is that my right leg is stiff, and comes straight down past motor on right side. I want to install the fans, but am worried the inside of right leg might get too hot

Maybe the web site can answer your question..

All of the heat blows to the right. But the heat is not that bad. It's a lot cooler then the heat that used to always be present. It is one of the best investments I could have made. The inside of your right leg will not feel any hotter then it does now, probably cooler.

Maybe I'm just dense, but how can air be cooler when it is blown on your right leg instead of just being radiated?? 56cfm of hot air blown on your leg would seem to be hotter. They use the term convection.... Our convection oven heats food faster than a regular oven.

Hate to sound like a broken record, BUT after half a dozen Harleys, they are all hot. The big difference is when you are stopped on a 2 wheeler, at least 1 of your legs is on the ground. I usually put both on the ground, distancing my legs from the motor and exhaust. With the Tri's you usually leave both feet on the floor boards, thus your proximity to the engine is too close. I mentioned I removed my lowers and replaced the crash bar with a Linby bar, giving me highway pegs to put my feet when stopped, this a lot more distance from the engine. Riding the roads, their is enough air flow.

Don't know how to answer that one except I am satisfied with the results. Guess it's like when people say the heat in Arizona is a different heat then in NH on a hot muggy day. When I actively monitor head and oil temps, those fans work. That works for me.

Broken record yes, but it's a forum:D

Read the original post. It's about a happy motor, not an easybake oven.

I like to think of Big Blue as my "3-wheel psychiatrist" and have an appointment scheduled in 10 minutes! Life is good!
