Worried about trike

Hello forum. This is a tough site to join! Took me awhile to get here but i made! Thanks to all in this forum

My name is Bob and i live in illinois! I ride a 08 Streetglide and love it. But getting a little uneasy on it anymore! So i purchased a 2020 ultra tir glide and love it too!! But now i am worried to ride it any more since i have read many articles about the rear brake locking up and causing a severe wreck at higher speeds. The trike has had the recall update done before i purchased it. But i read that even after the recall is completed that there r still serious issues!! Scares me and i am not sure if i even want to ride it. May sell it !!! Any info from this forum would be great!!!! Thanks.

Don't sell it. If it had the upgrade you will be all right and if you're still concerned, ride with the traction control off. That's where the problem was. I repeat don't sell it.

Hi Bob, :welcome:To Trike Talk

If you are handy you can scan your on board ECM for trouble codes any time, this will give you a heads up if there are any stored trouble codes

Most all of the early failures of the brake system were on the 19 model year, tho HD updated the software on the 20 model years free in as a precaution

You can have a look here on how to scan your trike for trouble codes

Also have a look here for a list of the diagnostic codes list

Bob…..Welcome to Trike Talk 👍👍👍..

Welcome. Good advice by all here. As stated the problem was with the Traction Control and speed had nothing to do with it other than the faster you are going if something happens it is of course magnified. If you read the recall you'll find the problem is due to an incorrect reading of the rear wheel speed sensors. The BCM (body control module) computer incorrectly thinks one of the wheels has lost traction and applies the brake to that wheel only to bring it back into line with the speed of the other wheel.

Normally this is fine except when there is no actual loss of traction. The 'fix' was to re-program the computer with updated software. I know there have been 'anecdotal' references to problems even after the recall was completed but we don't know all the circumstances and have no first hand evidence. Several years ago thousands of folks swore their Toyota cars had sudden unintended acceleration and some people were killed in crashes allegedly caused by this.

Turns out there were other factors such as driver error, floor mat causing accelerator pedal to stick, etc. So if you have confidence that your dealer did in fact complete the update and you have confidence in Harley that the update corrected the problem then let not your heart be troubled. Ride and enjoy . . . just as I am doing on m 2020 TG.

Welcome to Trike Talk, as said before switch the traction control off.

If you chose to switch off the Traction Control keep in mind each time you start your trike you will have to perform this in order to switch it off

You can read more on the recall here

First check the Vin. I also have a 20Tri have put a little over 28k on it . NO problems Mine was not listed in the recall. We got it start of Mar 2020. maybe they had the prob fixed by then. this 20 is soooo much nicer then the 16 was. I would not sell this Tri for anything. Runs great with NO engine mods.

Thanks for the responses!!

I need to pick up a adapter cable for my scanner to check codes. I spoke to Harley about my concerns on the update , they said i could take it back to the dealer and double check the work that was done!! When it warms up and dries out.i will!!!! I am torn between both my bikes!! I love them both😋. Again thanks for all responses!!!

What scanner? You do not need a special scanner, you can scan your trike thru the speedometer
