Ok, how many ride a trike that is factory stock, with cats, with stock mufflers, with stock air cleaner, no EBS, no tuners of any kind, no download of any kind from harley, everything stock just from the factory motor wise.

I'm not talking about bars, backrest and everything else you can put on, that is more of a comfort thing for personal taste.

I know harley's run lean from the factory, just curious how many ride their trikes in stock form from the factory, right now I am.

If you do, post the year of trike and how many miles just out of curiousity, mine is a 2016 with 3,400 miles give or take.

Ok, flame away, from what I have seen on here as member, there isn't that many with a stock motor, just curious, I may be surprised.

All for now Trampas

I do, '16 with about 4K miles. I figure I have enough $$$ tied up in it without putting a bunch of stuff on it that is not necessary. That being said I will probably make some changes to better accommodate my ego after about 10K miles.

I rode my '11 TG bone stock for about 5000 miles.

Every other bike I've had never got past 100 miles before I made some changes to it. :)

I put 50 miles on my original motor prior to changing the entire motor/TB/Clutch/etc.!! In my opinion the OEM motor does not have enough torque to move/accelerate the Trike either from a stop or from 60mph - 80mph passing. Neither of us are heavy weights either (165 me and 125 wife), plus any trip luggage!!

This is only my opinion!!

2015 TriGlide with 8000 miles on it. As is from the factory. Test drove the newer 2017. Harley did address what I have been bitchin about, lack of power on the high end. As oldprowler said, I have enuff cash into this bike and have no plans to do any upgrades to the engine.....for now :D

Or do a trade in for a GoldWing/RoadSmith trike.

Thanks for all the replies, I guess there is more than I thought with a factory stock motor running without any mods, I'm happy with mine but I know they run lean so time will tell if I do anything to it, guess I'm old school, if it's not broken don't fix it.

Kept mine bone stock until I tested my friends 16 with stage 1, apples to oranges, started my stage one upgrade as soon as i got off his bike, acceleration and power was a huge difference compared to my stock machine.

I guess one would have to test ride a bike with mod's.

We see a LOT of bikes and trikes. There really are a lot of them where the engine is bone stock. I think on the forums the folks that make changes are more "vocal" so that gives a bit of a skew to the perception that there is a higher % that make changes than really exists.

I don't have any hard figures...but my WAG is that about 50% of the Harley's out there have had no changes made to the engine.

Of the folks that have made changes, another WAG is that 75% or more have only done a Stage I upgrade (air cleaner, tuner, exhaust).

The Twin Cams do run a bit lean, and very hot.

Surprisingly, the one M8 we tested was NOT running lean from the factory, although it still had some heat issues.

A few years back i was looking at used Harley's, And what i found out is a ''stock'' used Harley is an oxymoron...When i traded my Stock 2013 Sportster' For a new 2015 Victory' The first thing the dealer did when they put the Sportster on the showroom floor was to add a full set of pipes and an performance air cleaner to it..

I've not touch mine have 19,000 miles on it 2015 Triglide

My 2012 with 30K on it when I traded it for my 2014. It just now turned 32K. I did break down and installed as et of Cobra Race Pro slipons because the sound was so deeeeeep and mellow (not loud). I also bought a SE Stage 1 air cleaner kit(haven't installed it yet).

I have never and will never do any engine modifications.

Like you, as a rule I only do Stage I (air cleaner, exhaust, tuner) changes to my bikes. Going beyond that can start exposing the weak links in the system.

Hey! Two days after you posted the above, I see you testing out a Stage I air cleaner.

Just joshing you. Glad you're enjoying your M8!

Kevin

Lol... I said I don't plan on changing much.. The AC is not to much it is just one little piece. Lol.. I really wanted to clean up the looks of the factory air box to be honest with you. The power gain was a plus and I liked that.

I totally agree with you on your testing finds on the new M8 engine concerning AC units and the power gains without a tune if the rest is left stock. Also like you, I think there is a lot of untapped power with the M8 engine. Other performance mods could really bring the power out if a guy wanted it.

Different animal than the 103 :xzqxz:

After mkt folks hate it

+1! I had a full Stage 1 on my 2014 TG, and was still looking for more at 50K miles. With almost 9000 on the 2017, stone stock, and I am pretty happy with it!

Oh, bummer that you are done with your warm weather riding for now....but it does sound like you have had a nice trip!

Sounds like you have the use of the gun down too...I did not mean to insult you...you probably know more about them than I ever will. :)

The main thing I meant to communicate is that every bike is different (even if it is technically the same). That is why you read some folks saying their bike is so hot that they cannot even ride it, or that it leave burns on their legs, while other folks with the same exact bike say that they don't understand why anyone is complaining...it is not hot at all.

This is because there can be huge differences in how hot the same model engine runs.

The only way to know how effective any part is, whether it is a fan, an oil cooler, an air cleaner, exhaust, etc. Is to do back to back, controlled testing, on the same exact bike.

Hope you have a great rest of your trip!!! :)

Kevin

Kevin, Thanks for clearing that up a bit. Who would have known that the same engine could run so much differently in terms of heat issues? I had suggested that there had been a "within subjects" mini design but in fact it was a "between subjects" situation (subjects=each bike) and the data really does not tell us much at this point. I guess at some point I am going to need to follow your recommendations about two 30 minute runs with and without the fans on and see what the cylinder heat temps do? Bob
