What kind of helmet do you wear?

I have about 7 helmets, 4 of which we still wear. When riding the trike we wear 3/4 Arai Classic Helmets color matched to my trike. on my 89 wineberry wing we wear color matched Shoei RJ Air 3/4 Helmets.

After going down at 25 m.p.h. and grinding the chin of my full face helmet half way through, I always wear my Arai full face with sena bluetooth headset.

I've already responded to this post a few times. But as I was reading the latest responses, I was thinking how much more dedicated most riders are then I am.

Here's my reasoning,,,. I fully understand the safety aspect of wearing a full face helmet. There's no doubt about it, that a full face is the very best regarding protection! Now, maybe it's just me, but wearing a full face makes me feel like I'm encased in a shell and completely isolated from the outside. Not to mention how damn HOT it gets in there! For me, I can see wearing a full face in freezing weather. But once the temperature rises, it would drive me crazy with the heat and completely ruin the riding experience for me. What I'm getting at is those of you who do wear a full face must either not mind the heat or love riding so much that putting up with that discomfort is secondary or not an issue at all. And I take my hat off to all of you who fit that description! For me, if a law ever came out that stated wearing a full face helmet was mandatory, that's when I'd give up riding even though I fully realize that it's the safest helmet.

Again, to all the full face helmet riders out there, you have my respect as real dedicated riders! ThumbUp

I always wore full face helmets before having Goldwings with fairings and windshields. If I were to go back to a bike without a windshield I would wear a full face helmet.

This is a very interesting thread. Lots of comments about what to wear, what I wear, what he or she wears. All in all, it really comes down to what the individual feels is safest for them or what may be the minimum to be legal.

I almost said that you are ALL right, but that is not really true. I BELIEVE it is your right to choose whether or not you wear one and what size/kind you wear. At least I think that you should have a choice. Obviously some states don't agree with that. But to not wear one at all, well I have my own thoughts about that too. If you have never gone down and needed it, my congratulations, but if you have or have had a friend that did and they didn't have a helmet on, WELL, it tends to make you have some different thoughts about the subject.

In 1997 I went down HARD. I was only doing about 35 mph, not fast, but the circumstances certainly added to the devastation of the accident. If we had had on a 1/2 helmet or no helmet, we both would have both been killed instantly, we hit the ground that hard, it split the back of my co-riders helmet 6 inches up the side. This was no cheap helmet, it was an HJC 3/4, and I swear by these helmets. I managed to escape with just a basil skull fracture.

As I said that was 17 years ago, and I have finally gotten back on a bike again. I wear and HJC CLS II modular. I will suffer the heat if that is necessary to ride as I love riding that much. That was a looooong 17 years to get back here.

So whatever you wear, or not. Is the ride worth it? Only you can answer that one. To me? Yep you bet.

You all ride safe and be careful out there.

GREAT Post....I had gone back to an open face 3/4 last year, but having also had on/off road motorcycle/kart/race car crashes, I tend to always go back to modular or full cover Helmets eventually....I've gone to a Full Coverage DOT/Snell Motocross Helmet now with either sunglasses or goggles....I feel "naked" without that full facial coverage now..."but"...yes, I feel it's Everyone's personal choice...I still don't really understand "no helmet" to this day though.....ThumbUp

Skuuter, you are absolutely right on. I have a friend in AZ that came to the hospital to ID me after my crash. I came in as "John Doe" my drivers license was on me after the crash. And he "still" doers not wear a helmet. I tell him about it every time that I see him. But that is his right of choice. He is still a good friend though. ;)

I've got several helmet's and the last one is a full face helmet. It has a flip up shield for those hot days and also a drop down sun shield inside. I will agree it is a little hotter than a 3/4 or smaller helmet but in my opion it's worth it. If it gets too hot I will get off and enjoy the view a little more often. Like said before it's your choice!

Yep, and if You wear Them often enough, You finally acclimate to Full Coverage Helmets.....Racers wear em' in the Deserts around the World during Endurance Races.....might be a little tougher/hotter than a "Street Cruise to Somewhere", and They seem to survive the heat.....ThumbUp

Just a note on the Skully helmet. I took a look at the beta form. Very clever way to put together a customer list. Online they say it will be in production this year so I am not sure how they will manage to get beta information into production that fast. They also say you are more likely to be "chosen" for beta if you put there stuff out on your Facebook, twitter and so on to other people. Smells like a con job to me.
