Were Do I Tie Down a Roadsmith Trike on a Trailer

I personally am not sure on the Roadsmith conversions but I am quite sure one of the Honda owners will be chiming in on this one. :clapping:

I haul my 06 Roadsmith trike with a 10' open trailer. I use a couple of soft ties around the lower triple tree and secure them to ratchet straps that connect to "D" rings in the trailer bed. On the rear I use a couple of ratchet straps that connect to the draw bar in the trailer hitch and secure the other end to the side trailer rails, locating the straps to provide a forward pull when tightened. I don't use a wheel chock but using one would be useful. I secure my front wheel to the front of the trailer frame using straps or rope. All of the straps I use on the trike are secured to provide a forward "pull" on the trike which keeps it snugged up against the front trailer rail.

DO NOT use the engine guards as tie down locations!

I finally found a pic of my Roadsmith trike on my trailer. It's a 5'X10' open trailer. I had to make a short draw bar for the trailer hitch, as the standard one was too long.

Nice trailer.

I'm looking for more of a enclosed trailer for the distance I plan on towing my trike and for the
protection from debris and the weather.
I don't think I can get by with a 5 x 10 though, I thinking in the range of a enclosed 6' x 12' or 7' x 12'.

I looking at hauling my Goldwing/Roadsmith trike down south next winter and purchasing a hauling trailer.

How/where would be the best area/place for the tie-downs?

Do I need a front wheel chock?

Cheers!

Never had damage and I also use it for my mowers and hauling appliances or a couch.... yes on the chock....

Mike I'd recommend the 7 X 12 minimum. Those couple extra inches on both sides will come in very handy. I have a wide body Well Cargo 8 X 12 "V" nose that works very well but it is a little over kill for the trike. It did work really well for two full dressed Wings though.

As for tie down points I do have chalks for all three positions since I am not positioning the bikes or trike all the way forward. You don't have to go super expensive. The one Harbor Freight sells for less then $50 has served me well. Use the soft tie wrapped around the fork tube between the upper and lower triple tree for the front points and the trailer hitch draw bar for the rear.

Since like me you will not be hauling like Bighorn does we need to strap for front and rear movement. The straps off the triple trees are positioned as far forward as possible without touching plastic. The straps off the draw bar are secured about 18 inches to the rear of the trike.

Here's a photo of my trailer's inside. You can see how I've positioned the D Rails for multi bike tie down...

Thanks, this is the size I'm thinking off.

Who sells those D Rails, nice

BTW.......For all you Roadsmith owners, my installer showed me two lopes on the rear frame next to the rear tires on both sides to use for tie-downs for the back end, check yours out..........ThumbUp

I misspoke. They are actually called E-Track. SORRY :blush:

I bought mine from the same place I bought my trailer. It's not too expensive and sure is versatile. There are several catches that attach to the track. I'd expect any good trailer sales and service place to have the E-Track or at least be able to get it for you.

Thanks for the Roadsmith tie down points. The tie down points I mentioned earlier were what I used on my '06 MotorTrike. I have not tried to load my 2015 in the trailer as yet so I'll have a look for the loops. :xszpv: :xszpv:

Trailer

I have a 6x12 trailer. The length is fine but the 6ft wide is a little close getting the trike in. A 7x12 would be best.

I use my 8 by 20 ft Loadmaster enclosed snowmobile trailer to haul my trike.
Drive it in and secure it with a strap around the front wheel and to a eye bolt in the front.
In the back I do the same, only secure it from the trikes trailer hitch to a eye bolt in the floor.
Doesn't move at all.

My suggestion is a 7x12 V nose. Like the man said, you will love the extra room...I've towed all over the country with an open and now a closed trailer. I'd never tie my bikes down from the forks. I used the crash bars on my Wings and Ultras, and now that I Trike I still tie off my crash bars and run a tie down through each rear wheel do the D ring just to be safe. In my experience I've found you don't need to use the forks, especially with a Trike.

I have a 7 X 12 tandem which I really enjoy using. I've installed a Wheeldock chock (www.wheeldock.com) which came highly recommended and I've not been disappointed. At the rear I hook the tiedown straps to the tow chain rings on the hitch and then to the rear side D rings. The trike never moves.

I believe its important to get the right sized trailer and equip it so you'll be confident that your trike is secure!

Do you tie down the front or do you rely on the wheel chock to hold down the front???

I'll be waiting for a answer to this question also, because I'm, debating if I should purchase a wheel chock or not........

To me the chock in necessary so the trike can be positioned for correct weight and balance. There are probably other ways to tie the wheel in place but the chock makes it so simple. :xszpv::xszpv:

Additional to my PM these are not normal ratchet straps.... they are Push Button adjustable and much easier to use..... some what hard to explain but I have replaced all my old straps with these....
