I have been meaning to post this for some while but want to wait and see if it persisted. I triked my 2012 GW in Feb of this year and have noticed a difference in how other riders wave to me, especially harley riders. While on 2 wheels I did not notice harley riders not waving, but now on a trike it seems they are the ones waving first. There does not seem that hesitancy in acknowledging me. Has anyone else noticed this?
I just figured maybe they thought I was older and they were giving respect to their elders, or they assumed I had money (since these things ARE expensive), and were giving respect.

Now you've done it Doc. The whole waving thing is a bigger can of worms than you would use in a year of fishing.
My guess, as a Harley rider, these other HD riders just see a trike and are assuming it is a HD. I go days on 2-wheels with nobody waving back. Mixed results on my Triglide also. One recent observation, people tend to wave back to anything on nice days. If it is cold, dark or nasty, they are in their own world. That said, if traffic dictates, I keep an eye ahead of me. I don't always see bikes/trikes coming other way. It used to be easier in past before cars started having always on headlights to spot bike from afar.

I'm still waiting for my trike kit to be installed (hopefully any day now?). I notice that some of the Harley riders will wave to me on my wing when they are alone, but almost never when they are in a group.

We do a lot of traveling on our trike and get waves from at least 80% of the motorcycles we pass. We also wave at most of the bikes we pass. On the way out to Sturgis 2 years ago, we were passed by a lot of HD's and most of them wave too.

I don't take my hands off the bars to wave, I just throw up a piece sign. If they don't wave back, I just leave half the piece sign out. :):)

I wave at Trikes, Motorcycles, and Scooters...if They wave back, so be it, if not, so be it.....I stopped weeding out Who does the most waving by Brand or Sterotype long ago.....I just do this: :wave4:...and then do this: :GL1800:..."simple formula", no use complicating it..... ;)

I wave to everyone..:wave4::wave4:
And I'll add if i see a bike/trike stopped on the side of the road, Ill stop [if it's safe to stop] and ask if they need help.....

I have to agree with Skuuter

& Rick

I'm nondenominational - I wave at everybody. If they don't wave back, they lost a little joy for their day.

I just Wave at Everybody when I Can Safely & I don't care if they wave or not the Wave is just me being friendly toward them they don't have to wave back for me to get the Blessing of the Wave. I Still get to enjoy My Ride.

Ride Safe!!

I wave at everyone, but a word of caution we were riding in Nebo NC over Memorial Day weekend and a cruiser was so busy waving and looking at our column line of bikes he did not see the dump truck stooped in front of him. He laid it down with his Grandson on the back, happy to say both walked away with just a little rash and hurt pride, but the to the man the rear of our column blaimed it on waving. In fact it frighten 2 of them so much they said they would never wave again. Good part was as road Captian I was lost, as a result we were there to help the old guy out. Bad part If I had not been lost maybe he would not have been distracted???

Wave and keep your eyes on the road.

Saw these about 5 years ago, listing why some riders don't wave.... some are funny:

Top Ten Reasons Why BMW Riders Do Not Wave
________________________________________

10. New Aerostich suit too stiff to raise arm.
9. Removing a hand from the bars is considered "bad form."
8. Your bike isn't weird enough looking to justify acknowledgment.
7. Too sore from an 800-mile day on a stock "comfort" seat.
6. Too busy programming the GPS, monitoring radar, listening to ipod,XM, and talking on the cell phone.
5. He's an Iron Butt rider and you're not!
4. Wires from Gerbings is too short.
3. You're not riding the "right kind" of BMW.
2. You haven't been properly introduced.
1. Afraid it will be misinterpreted as a friendly gesture.

The Top Ten Reasons Why Harley Riders Don't Wave Back

10. Afraid it will invalidate warranty.
9. Leather and studs make it too heavy to raise arm.
8. Refuse to wave to anyone whose bike is already paid for.
7. Afraid to let go of handlebars because they might vibrate off.
6. Rushing wind would blow scabs off the new tattoos.
5. Angry because just took out second mortgage to pay luxury tax on new Harley.
4. Just discovered the fine print in owner's manual and realized H-D is partially owned by Honda.
3. Can't tell if other riders are waving or just reaching to cover their ears like everyone else.
2. Remembers the last time a Harley rider waved back, he impaled his
hand on spiked helmet.
1. They're too tired from spending hours polishing all that chrome to lift their arms.

Top Ten Reasons Why Sport-bike Riders Don't Wave Back

10. They have not been riding long enough to know they're supposed to.
9. They're going too fast to have time enough to register the movement and respond.
8. You weren't wearing bright enough gear.
7. If they stick their arm out going that fast they'll rip it out of the
socket.
6. They're too occupied with trying to get rid of their chicken strips.
5. They look way too cool with both hands on the bars or they don't want to unbalance themselves while standing on the tank.
4. Their skin tight-Kevlar-ballistic-nylon-carbon fiber-kangaroo-leather suits prevent any position other than fetal.
3. Raising an arm allows bugs into the armholes of their tank tops.
2. It's too hard to do one-handed stoppies.
1. They were too busy slipping their flip-flop back on.

I started a thread on this subject several months ago and got several responses. The majority seem to agree that we wave at just about everyone and if they don't wave back, let it go. I do know for a fact that when I ride my Harley, which is a 2 wheeler, more folks wave that when I'm on my Wing trike. Go figure.

I wave to all motorcycles/scooters/mopeds. Did it 55 years ago and will continue until I can't ride anymore. It's just a "Howdy" sign between like minded people, same as Vette drivers. Doesn't mean anything more. If riders wave back - fine, if not - also fine. I'm not going to loose sleep over it. Also there is a time for not waving - around Sturgis or any other large gathering of bikers, heavy traffic, road construction or any other situation where it might cause loss of control of the bike. I don't like to wave in the rain - it breaks the watertight seal I have. :)
I confess I don't wave back sometimes because I'm looking somewhere else and didn't see you - that's the only time I don't wave back. ThumbUp

Ya know I've been ridin HARLEY'S for over 35 yrs now. Some times I wave sometime I don't depends on my mood or what I'm doing at the time. What cracks me up sometimes is. A Harley rider will wave or just give you two fingered wave. But some wingers will damn near stand on their seats to get your attn::D. I always wave when I see a headlight coming at me. I don't care if your on a Harley or a Wing. Met some nice people on Wings. [/B]

Do you do the lazy "point at the ground" salute or do you actually "wave" and not get embarrassed about it??

In my observations I notice that touring riders do a real wave and the sporty or cruiser rider does the lazy wave.

:wave4:

Good analysis on "lazy vs real"... :D

We try to wave to everybody - when we see them in time.

I usually raise my hand, fingers spread wide. ;)

 ......NOW THAT'S FUNNY...... ,,,Thanks for the laugh on such an issue

I have always had the platform, if I see someone without a wave, I'll give them one of mine. That is about as much thought as I devote to it, but I do draw the line on liquor cycles.
