Water Pump Issue Checking Circuits

I have a 2019 tri glide ultra. My engine and temp lights went on. After starting the bike and letting idle, the temperature got to 277 degrees. The water pump, coolant and hoses felt cold. Before I get a new pump, I want to check the voltage to the pump. With the ignition on, at the left prong (the cooling relay power circuit) I got 12.02 volts. At the center prong ( cooling pump control circuit ) I got 1.09 volts. Can someone tell me if these readings are correct. If not what would be my next step? Thanks in advance.

I know you have the ESP, but boy that sounds high. I’d be curious to see a breakdown of the bill.

The updated pump for 2017 & up is part number 26600048A. Price is $458.53. Takes 1qt of coolant @ $22.95. Labor shows 1.9 hours. Should be around $800 with tax.

If you have a 2016 or older, it takes an update kit, part number 26800107. Price is $522.75. Takes 1qt coolant @ $22.95. Labor shows 2.4 hours. Guys on one of the other forums are reporting a $900 bill which is about right.

Couple interesting tidbits I found:

Harley Genuine Coolant is actually made by Peak and is the orange extended Dex Cool used in GM vehicles.

The reason Harley wants you to change it every 2 years is their coolant system isn’t 100% sealed. Oxygen reacts with Dex Cool and causes it to congeal and thickens in viscosity. (Google GM Dex Cool gelling and be prepared 😕)

The H-D coolant pumps are Magnetic drive and when the coolant thickens, it overheats the motor coil burning it out and/or overheats the ground connector by arcing.

I’m in no way shape or form suggesting it, but I’ve read on other H-D forums where guys are switching to the Honda blue antifreeze or just using standard green. Myself, I’m getting ready to change it out and use the Case IH blue antifreeze I use in my diesel tractors.

Just in the process of having the pump replaced under warranty for my 2021 tri glide. HD service told me that parts and labour would be around $1,400. Glad the previous owner had the ESP.
Wow. Prices are really going up. I had my 19 tri glide pump changed under extended warranty in 22. $600 total. That's a heck of a jump.

Carl,
That’s some great info you have!
I currently don’t have an issue, but you’re right…. and these appear to be consistent and “inherited” issues on the water pumps that I hear and read about all the time.
Appreciate you putting this info on here!

Thanks for the information. The coolant information is interesting and perhaps useful to prevent future occurrences. I hope to pick up my trike today and get some info on paper as to what the warranty cost is. Also remember I'm in Alberta Canada and we pay a very hefty premium for that (dubious) privilege.

In case of interest, here is some cost info.

I now have the paper that detailed the ESP cost for the work.
The total cost for changing out the coolant pump, rad cap, was $1,137.40 CAD.

The cost for coolant pump, rad cap, etc. came to $974.75 CAD. The other cost items were shop supplies, deductible and GST (tax). Labour was 1.75 hr. at a cost of $279.91 CAD, parts were $694.84 CAD.

Difference between CAD and USD cost for the pump part number 26600048A. USD Price is $458.53 & CAD price is $637.95.

As long as you have warranty on the bike, I wouldn’t use anything except for what H-D recommends.

Once the bike is out of warranty, that’s up to you. From everything I was reading on a couple other forums, some continued to use H-D brand and changing it every couple of years.

There were several others though complaining about H-D (Dex Cool extended life) gelling and using about anything except for it.

I’m not suggesting you do, but if it were me and I had extra coolant from my Mustang, I’d use it especially since it’s designed for aluminum motors.

Beware if you do change antifreeze that you thoroughly flush the ENTIRE system! If there is any left in the hoses, pump, radiator and you pour in incompatible fluid, it could react and turn to gel as well. Even if the new fluid you are using says compatible with all other fluids, I wouldn’t take that chance.

And make sure to bleed the system as DK Customs explains here:
