Ramblin' on and on....
This month's TOTM, Tom and Lou Ann's very cool Renegade reminds me of one of the things I think are unique to the trike world - the sheer variety of trikes that are accepted into the genre.
On this board the majority of trikes seem to be motorcycle based conversions in all their variety, and we have seen such things as Can-Am Spyders, Stallions, I remember someone had a Carver, V8 Choppers trikes, Boss Hoss trikes, VW based trikes of all types from factory builts like Trike Shop Runabouts or Boom trikes and more to home builds that are limited only by the imagination and skill of the builder.
At trike events I have seen trikes that are made from the back half of a Fireo with frame, steering and seating made by the owner, I have seen a trike made from the front of an early 80's Olds Toronado - it was a body-on frame car, and the builder basically cut off the front of the car at the fire wall and made a trike frame connecting to the front end of the car frame. Somehow he set up the wheels so they ran straight and rigid, sat in front of the radiator, the original lights worked along with the headlight on the steering head and he molded a 10 gallon gas tank that sat between his legs when he rode. Very unique!
There will be a great variety of trikes at the Eureka Springs "Family Reunion" in June. Well worth the trip to the middle of the country to see what TT members ride.
The Brothers Of The Third Wheel seems to be an organization that a large number of it's members build their own rides. If there is a BTW Trike-In in your area, it is worth checking out to see the great variety of rides their members ride and/or built. There will be conversions, some factory built trikes, and some home built trikes that will make you marvel at the skill and engineering involved, and there will be others that are evident it was made in someone's garage, but the respective owners are rightly proud of the machine they built with what they had to work with.
