Trike Speed Record

This seems to be the world trike speed record holder as far as I can determine. Can you imagine 136 MPH on a trike?


A Triumph Rocket III Touring bike fitted with a Motor Trike conversion body and equipped with a Carpenter Racing motor kit, posted a 136 mph top speed and FIM World Record (pending ratification by Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme )

I never really thought about a world speed record for trikes, but I kind of thought it would take a little more speed than that to set a record, I have had my trike up to a hundred miles an hour briefly while passing a line of trucks an trying to do it before I ran out of lane, maybe not too smart of a thing to do but I did it and that record is only 36 miles per hour faster and my 1500 is pretty much stock except for the conversion. I doubt I could have gotten much more speed out of it, I was pretty much full on the throttle but it would seem with just a little custom engine work you could get that kind of speed out of a goldwing engine especially the 1800s and a stripped down trike.

I am also surprised that 136 MPH is the record. Maybe it's for a specific class? If not, the record seems within reach!

Not even close.

The current land speed record is 763 mph. And it was a TRIKE.

Nope. Hell, Craig Breedlove ran over 400mph in the mid 60's. You just need big, big balls and rocket fuel. The British are shooting to break 1000 mph this year.

August 1963 Craig averaged 407 mph on a trike called Spirit of America, powered by a GE J47 jet engine.

So, that's still not anywhere near Mach 1.

In October of 1997, Andy Green, an RAF fighter pilot, driving for Richard Noble in the Thrust SSC did the unthinkable by breaking the sound barrier at Mach 1.02. The speed of sound is estimated to be roughly around 740 MPH, but varies depending on temperature and elevation.

I believe the trike record is for a non-jet engine trike with an internal combustion engine. The record is set by doing two passes of a flying mile, the second pass has to be faster or within 1% of the first pass.

WLS records for sidecars and tadpoles.

Land Speed Racing Sidecar “ Shockwave” is the current record holder at over 162mph. Given the asymmetry of a sidecar motorcycle, power delivery, wheel weighting, track and drag coefficient, designing a machine for Land Speed Record competition is a special challenge.
