Trike rolls backward while parked in gear

Today, I visited my nextdoor neighbor. Left the trike parked in gear on a slight incline.

The old garage has been converted to an office. I was in the house and the secretary in the office lets out a scream that my trike was rolling.

She runs out and is attempting to grab and hold the handle bars to keep the trike from going any further. I ran out and grabbed the brake to stop the beast.

It is not much of an incline, but enough to let the trike move backwards in gear.

Other than not parking on an incline, what can I do to remedy this? Is there a safer (more sturdy) gear to put the trike in so this will not occur again?

8 inch bunge cord to hold front brake on.

This isn't a loaded question, just wondering if clamping down the brake for hours on end is bad for the seals in the brake system?

And shouldn't the bike have held in 1st gear? Maybe the clutch is worn?

Hang in there....This has been Buggin' me for a long time, so I'm working on a mechanical remedy! Pressure on the system should have no effect on seals but I'll run that one pass some engineering pals.

Just curious....I'm assuming that most of these "Rollin' Trike Episodes" are on Trikes with lotsa' miles on em' and have quite a bit of compression loss...??? I've owned Bikes and Cars that would do it, but usually only after havin' tons of mileage......Anyone havin' this issue with low mileage...???

those buggers will beat feet if you dont clamp them down, the strap works but being hydro over time the brakes will fade and the trike rolls down the hill, beside the parking brake like I had installed, the best I have hear is to carry a small cheap wally world CHOCK, simple and certain,,,fyi I love my parking brake that and the aux fuel tank help big time on my trip up to fairbanks,,,

In first it should not Roll in 4th or 5th it will. are you certain you stopped in 1st. It could have popped out of 1st. Other explanation is worn clutch but then i would think you feel that on take off too. What ever you do, DO NOT use REV as a parking brake . Could be a $1,000 experience

Jeg's carries a Mechanical Line Lock made by Jaymar...gonna check with the guys at Ace Motor Works next week about feasability of this being installed in the rear brake syatem to hold the Trike as a Park Brake. I used one on a Fiero that I swapped a Grand Prix 3800 engine into...I had upgraded the Brakes to '90 Beretta Discs (Vented Rotors and larger Caliper Pistons); which eliminated the Fiero E-Brake. The Mech Line Lock is simple operation, step on the Brake Pedal, Press the Button on the Line Lock and Rear Brake is set...step on Brake Pedal and Line Lock releases.

If you do it to the front brake instead you can do some cool burn outs at the local drive-in <LOL>

My trike has 21,000 miles.

Comanche - my guess is that it was not quite in gear and popped out. Have you tried it again, by putting it in first and trying to push it backward?

Just about to fit a wee invention by one of my friends. It fits onto the front brake and press a wee plunger and it holds the front brake in position..click the brake lever and hey presto you are back in action again. It has worked very well and replaces the need for a parking brake.

Lets see: I put my Stallion in park and set the emergency brake! Hasen't gotten loose in the corral yet. Charlie D .<img src="images/smilies/tongue2.gif" border="0" alt="" title="blowing a raspberry" class="inlineimg" />

Sounds like the Line Lock I was talking about Wolf...But I'd prefer it on the Rear (more Tire contacting the pavement...and John, I work too hard to be leaving any hard earned rubber on the blacktop ;-)

Bob if the hydro fades over time then the seals are starting to wear in the master cyclinder and a rebuild will be in order soon.

I've never used one...... But would a front rotor lock work?

Great idea.....I've used these in the past for security purposes on Sport Bikes. Security from rolling and theft....:)....gota' be careful about forgettin' it's on there though. I've been lucky, almost forgot a coupla' times. I've seen both nasty and funny incidents when Folks did try to ride off with one on though.....

Yes, the trike was in first solidly. It would start to roll, then pause, then start rolling again. I thought about putting velcro on the front brake to the handlebar, but got a great tip from a "Ken in Canada" who said if I had the slightest even microscopic leak in the master cylinder all my brake fluid would be on the ground and terrible things could happen.

I will be getting one of those walmart chocks. Just have to remember to remove it before trying to back up.

On my C50 I had a cheapie wheel lock which just snapped when I took off with it still locked. No, I won't be using a lock to keep it from rolling. LOL.

Same fix I showed you on the other board! Just started selling these! 50% off for board members, only $149.95
Color Matching and Kury Krome shaft avail at an unbelievably higher price

This is the best parking brake period.[

Have a parking brake on the Roadsmith 1800. Don't ever use it. First gear holds it in place. Don't like using the PB, forgot the first time I used it............10 miles later remembered. :D

forgot mine once, but the trike wouldnt move so it was an immediate reminder,,,stopped on some pretty big hills going to alaska and was always happy to see it there when I returned from a walk.

As the Roadsmith kit comes from Trike Shop, for those of us who did our own conversions, the park brake is in dire need of adjustment. Once I got mine set up to where it would hold, it definitely tells me if I forget to take it off. I have had it creap a bit on steep inclines, but add in 1st gear & it stays put. I still carry a small chock out of force of habit from when I worked construction. Safety guys didn't like it when we didn't chock even with air brakes.
