Hey Mike, the trike is back in the shop again for the using of the 2qrts of oil going to Denver. Was there 2hrs talking to the owner & techs. They did a leak down test on the cylinders. Guess what, it failed. Imagine that. I told them to just install new jugs & be done with it. They have to see if it is out of round. If not they are going to Hone them again & send me on my way. Go figure. If it happens again its history.

I told them to break it in so they can't come back on me & say I messed it up.

Hopefully 3rd time is a charm. Jim

If they are out of round, they most likely don't have the type hone there will make it round without it being out of specs.
Bore it .010 then hone on size.

Sorry to hear you are having such trouble.

At this point I would be LIVID, as I'm sure you are. I think they owe you new jugs, for all the back and forth BS you have endured. I wonder if talking to the MOCO directly would influnce this in your favor! It just seems to me that boring the cyclinders out, on a big bore motor would shorten the lifespan-how many times can you do it? Good luckThumbUp

They can only hone so much off before the piston to call clearance will be to great, I hope they know to check this clearance before they waste your time. A good many Harley cylinders are out of round from the get go. When I built my 120 I bought the pistons and the HD bigger bore cyls from Head Quarters, Doug bores them .005 to true them because every set he has checked has had an uneven taper in them.

At this point,, have them replace the jugs!!! Don't even bother trying to have the cylinders honed. You've already gone through enough!

I tried to tell them to install new jugs from the get go. Then they tell me if they just hone the jugs I don't have to break it in. Bullcrap!! I've built enough engines to know better than that. I'm going to have another talk with them.

"Bullcrap" is right! I've also built quite a few engines in my day and from what I'm hearing, honing the existing cylinders will be a waste of time, let alone their claim about breaking in the new jugs!

They are shooting a load of b/s.

It is getting where so many are running their mouth about something they just don't have a clue about.

Stupid ignored excuses, and they do it with arrogance too..

Just my opinion.

They can't fire me, I own the company I work for.

I'll let you guys know what happens. Sure would like to get it back before Labor Day weekend. I called the owner again today & tried to talk sense with him. He told the guys to quit measuring this & that & just put it back together the way it's suppose to be. So we'll see what happens. I'll keep you posted. Jim

Was at the Harley shop Monday to see whats up with the bike. They are installing new jugs. Go figure. They said the jugs were out of round really bad.Guess it helped to go over there & bitch a little. They said the parts were going to be hear today. Maybe I will get it back for the weekend for our ride to Savannah,Ill. But it is suppose to rain like mad from the hurricane. Still have to break it in before I go,but really don't have time to break it in. Last time we drove out there it was the same situation. I hit 500mi on the Dan Ryan in Chicago. Did my 1st wheellie there too. Hopefully I won't be using alot of oil again, but will have to take another long ride to fine out. Maybe I can get a2500mi ride to Denver again before May. Thats when my warranty is up. Jim

At least they're finally doing the right thing. Just a shame they had to put you through the whole rebuild scenario.

I hope their using new rings. Have you ever read this break in method Click Here.

Yeh Mike, thats exactly what I did the last time. Didn't work for me. Not doing that this time. I'll take my changes the other way. I still haven't heard from the shop about my bike. It's hard to break a motor in going down the toll road or interstate, or Dan Ryan. Ask your dad about the Dan Ryan. I think thats the way he went west. What ever happens with the bike I hope its good. If not I will probably trade it & lose my ass. Ride that Wing hard & safe buddy. Talked to Dennis. Said he is swamped with the CW. He is really a hell of a good guy. Wanted to ride down to see him but he is too busy to bug right now. Jim

No Randy, there is a big biker thing that goes on across the river from Savannah,Ill. We don't go to that. We just ride around, & go to a couple of bars. There is one in New Diggins,Wis. It's a real old bar out in the boonies. Me & the wife just go along for the ride. We might have a couple of beers & thats it. We don't get into the drinking thing. We usually go to J&P Cycle but don't know if we are going this time. We are staying in Elizabeth,Ill. We are going to Galiena again, Pretty neat town. What is the Davis Rally? Jim We don't even have the bike back from the shop yet.

I've been to that bar in new diggins, that hard to find if you dont have a leader that knows where he's going. Have you ever been to Poopies in Savana? that a popular biker bar.

Yeh we go there everytime we're out there. Then we hit Poopies & Iron Horse Saloon in Savannah. Nice little bike museum & you can get married upstairs. There is a cool museum in the same block with stuff the American Pickers have for sale in there. When we were at the Rally there was a guy that come up from behind & tapped me on the shoulder & said nice shirt you have on. I had the Iron Horse Saloon shirt on & he had one on too. I think he was from West Virginia. Small world. Did you go to the rally in Maggie Valley? If so I think me & Dennis Swan saw you on 25 going North. We were right behind you. I thought we saw you on 75 going north bound. If so we were behind you when you turned off somewhere. Jim You were pulling a trailer, right?

Getting caught in a traffic jam on a fresh top end sure isn't a good thing, I remember how nasty the traffic was in 2008 when we went that direction. I was riding my 06 Ultra which at the time was 95", that bugger got hot. It pinged like crazy it was so hot, at one point I ended up shutting it down and pushing. I hope once they get it done you won't have anymore problems, lord knows you sure have had your share.

Davis Rally is a rally put on by the Davis family for over 30 years for all bikes . Its always the weekend after Labor Day. There is a parade on Saturday night .

do what my friend did. had a 09 then 11. went to sturgis & bought a GL trike. problem solved.

I can understand what your saying, kind of the direction I'm heading. However there are folks who the Goldwing doesn't fit very well and there are die hard Harley Davidson enthusiast who just won't switch brands.

It took quite a bit of agonizing on my part before I could bring myself to buy a GL1800, at times I feel like a traitor until I get the GL out and then I understand why I did it. The other part is I still do own a Harley so I have the best of both worlds.

Hey traitor(just kidding Mike). Got the bike back at 5:00p.m. today. They install the new jugs, New SE push rods, rings, valve guide seals (so they say) plus gaskets. I asked the service manager how he would break it in cause I don't have time before our trip tomorrow. Drive it like you stole it. I said I will take the toll road to Chicago which is 70mph. He said go for it. Drive it like I normally do. So I will let you know how it goes when I get back. He told me to change oit around 500mi & bring him the oil filter to cut in 1/2 to see what got inside from the break in. Plus they put in a new radio. Jim

Just call me Benedict:D, your rings will be seated within the 1st 25 miles so I'd expect you would be ok. The only thing I wouldn't do is let it get real hot until you get the 500 miles on it. I hope this takes care of the problem for you.

It all depends at what time you go through Chicago, it can be a real challenge. Good luck.

WE went around Chicago on 294 to 88 to39 to 20 then to Galena,Ill. Did 70mph 80% of the way. Got 37-38mpg. Not bad huh? I was getting 27-32 at 75mph before the new jugs & no more pinging for some reason. Don't know they could have done different. If they retuned it wouldn't that mess with the Dyno tune? What ever they did it runs great now. Just hope it stays that way. Jim

If its running great I wouldn't sweat the details, your previous top end could have been screwed up from the get go and this time it is finally right. If its running strong, not burning oil, not pining and running cool then I'd say all is well.
