AK....=1600 Twin port...made from 1972 to 1980...If that helps??

Like virtually all vw based trikes it is a conglomeration of different year/model/aftermarket parts.

If you need identification......it will be one piece at a time.

It looks like possibly a 68 to 74 type 3 rear sub frame. If it has an aluminum trans case (instead of iron) it very possibly in the 68 to 74 range type 3 trans also.

As NO us import type 1 vw ever came with and automatic trans........that means the type 1 engine you have did not ever come attached to that trans.

Not a problem....as long as all the correct parts from the original type 3 are installed correctly onto the type 1 engine.

So the AK.... is a later number and puts this into the "desirable" engine case category. But with as old as these vw's are it has been rebuilt/cobbled together/ hot rodded in many many many undetectable ways that can not be seen or identified by looking at the outside of the engine.

As an extreme example.....absolutely NO part of my vw engine ever came from any Volkswagen factory.

Thanks for the fast response

Hey ,

I really Appreciate the fast and in depth response it gives me somewhere to start. I did notice while I was looking for the transmission number that the lifter tube are leaking oil. I guess I will be starting there with the repairs to this machine. I also need to find a fuel cap for the tank any idea who made this tank? I thought it looked like a JSD off road tank. I know I need a quarter turn cap for it.
