I have a gl1500se with a champion kit. it come with the dunlop P 205/70 R15 . these tires will hydroplane in a min. and I don't mean running 70. be cause I know how easy they do hydroplane I run 50 or 55 and if there is standing water on the road I run slower.

I am looking to put new tires on and stop the easy hrdroplane I am open to Ideals and tires to look at. I know some of you have had the same problem, what did you do to correct it.
 
I've experienced both the GL1800 Motor Trike and the Stallion hydroplane. The first thing I learned is to cut off the cruise control and reduce speed. If the rain gets too hard - get off the road and under shelter. I've already experienced one serious accident (where I was not at fault, farm implement dealer driving a farm tractor pulled left from the right lane shoulder in front of me when I was passing him) and have no wish to repeat the experience. Just recently under went a third surgery on my face and eye as a result. Just slow down or stop.
 
A good friend of mine that has had a trike for a long time highly recommends the Goodyear Assurance TripleTred All-Season Tires. I trust his judgement as he is a avid rider.

I've never had them, but next spring, I plan on getting some installed. :) I'm sure there are other good alternatives.
 
When I had my GL1500 Goldwing I had the same problem with hydroplaning, it had a Motor Trike kit on it. I changed my tires to a Goodyear and it helped some but still had problems with it. There are several manufactures that claim their tires are good on shedding water. Good luck with your search.

When I had my 1500 GW/MT I put on a new set of Cooper tires ( don't remember the model) but I got caught in a downpour and they were very stable. I do know that a lot of the 1500s came with wide tires and a lot people are changing to a narrower tire! The thinking is that a narrower tire turns easier and is less likely to hydroplane! Hope you come up with a good solution because hydroplaning isn't fun.

I'm very aware of hydroplaning after totaling my Toyota Tundra going thru unnoticeable standing water. Pick-ups and trikes have one thing in common, not much weight over the rear wheels. I normally drive about 5 to 8 mph over the speed limit but when it rains I'm the slowest driver on the road.

you are the 3 ed person that said they went with Cooper's now if I can fomd the model I will try them. I know there has to be a better tire then the dunlop 205/70 R15

yes I know about cruise control and rduceing speed. I was told for rule was slow down 15 mil. hr. my normal speed is 65-68 so runing 50. I don't trust these tires and slow even more.
 
Personally Ive never been happy with any Dunlop or Slipstones on a bike or trike in the rain.

Here in my part of Florida it rains about 9 months out of the year. Almost daily from April to November.

I use my bike and trike to commute to work with. Unless its already raining in the AM. My bike is double dark a car or in my case Light Truck tire on the rear a rear bike tire on the front.

But with the trike.

Im running BF Goodrich 225-60-16 H rated TAs 24 psi. MPA on the front 36 psi.

Almost 30K miles and not a single incident to report.

Id like to go a little bit bigger but dont know if I can.

I too am needing new rears and look forward to see what you guys have to say.

I dont want to be cheap. But $$ sometimes do count. So a $300 run flat super tire isnt going to happen.

Alot of the off brand tires are made by the majors. So I will be doing my homework when my wear bars show. Just a weeee bit more.:AGGHH:

Im actually kidding myself. I need some new rears NOW.

Lets get us some good ideas please for the OP and me.
 
My 2 cents. I ride a 2008 Honda motortrike. Front tire pilot activ Michelin 130/70/18 (40 lbs air) and rears tires are B.f.goodrich P225/60R/15 (24 lbs. air). I have ridden in hard rains doing 60 MPH. without hydroplaning. Road conditions were decent but not great. Traffic was light so I wanted to try/push my ride to see if it would hydroplane, very little if any. By the way when it pours down hard and have to ride I turn on my emergency flashers so hopefully I can be seen better.

Just FYI in some states (Florida is one) riding with your emergency flashers on is not legal. Emergency flashers are to be used when your on the side of the road.

If you have a problem and are driving really slow compared to traffic most officer understand the flashers then, even though the statute does not give that option in Florida.

They can blind the person behind you and also if you turn or change lanes they will not know because the turn signals do not work when the flashers are on.

Does sound like you have good tires for handling rain. If you live in a rainy area buy tires that have a high WX rating.

Good point Gorilla. Keep in mind that in South Fla lots of people don't even use turn signals. I don't trust any lights on cars down here. And of course, turn signals should be called DIRECTION SIGNALS. In some moves lane to lane no signals needed b/c they are not turning just moving over = ouch, such logic may hurt you...........
 
Not legal in Florida, ok good to know but I live in Houston,tx and I don't think its legal here either. But if its pouring hard and can't exit I turn my on anyway. We don't have a shortage of driving idiots out here and pretty sure you don't either. Cops seem to understand the situation we're in and don't bother us. Have had cops pass me on freeway under those conditions. As for not being able to use turn signals most/lots of people forgot how to use them anyway. Let me repeat I'm talking hard pouring rain, hard to see and idiots don't give you room to exit.

Ive never seen them.:p

Most of the time. I feel as Im the only one who uses them and then wonder why I bother...............
 
When the snowbirds migrate to NY, they remove the up and down handle on the left side of steering wheel. It restricts the a/c vent air flo. Told one lady it's a good place to hang the keys. 😤
