Trike Backed Into..

Tried this before I took it to HD..but seeing your post thought I should retry it. Took seat off hand pumped up to 50# started spraying and connection on elbow coming thru the trunk wall on the value stem Boom! Bubbles..carefully snugged fitting and bubbles stopped. Will let it sit over night and see. Thanks FuzzyWuzHe you got me back on track. Set the S&S back to factory and tuned it runs less rich and idle is right now, last thing I had was the air now I believe you fixed that. Tomorrow may be a great riding day. :pepper:

I get the feeling after being out of biking last 20 years. H-D feels its a rich mans game now. So even with my bad knees I'll have to do more wrenching again. Like you back in the day..I built some fine looking choppers thru 70 and 80's. Kind of miss the old school stuff. All this throttle by wire and EPA crap, don't get me started. Why I bought an older Trike wanted Carb, cables and grease. :)

My kinda guy, your preaching to the choir.

I read what you went thru rebuilding your Trike, takes a man in love with his bike to save it from the junk yard. Or PC I should say Re-Cycle Industry. That beauty would of been lost if not for you.:clapping:

There are places where you can still get new obsolete parts such as V twin online but you have to go through a dealer to get them they wont sell to an individual, yes your pay gonna pay a higher price for them than their original costs but hey! You can get them.
There are some good bone yards out their too.

Like yourself I built more than one chopper in my miss spent youth in fact I started twisting wrenches on bikes when I was just a kid and old enough to understand what was going on.
My dad and uncle had a side business of motorcycle repair in the barn and good start on a boneyard out back.

A man In love with his bike is correct.
My background instilled in me a love for motorcycles that only building and repair from an early age can give a guy.

People who are in love with riding are many, people in love with motorcycles are much fewer. Maybe that's why I prefer the old school machines?

I constantly read people on this forum complaining that Harley Davidson still has a long way to go to catch up to Honda and to me Harley Davidsons efforts to do so has altered the motor company's attitude toward business, the customer and approach to building motorcycles in ways I really don't care for.
I find it very hard to be crazy about the newest technology and gadgets, to me they are just window dressings, something to wrong, expensive to maintain, prone to breakage and generally a pain the butt.

I cant figure out why people keep screaming for it? If you want to ride a computer put wheels and handlebars on your MAC fer Christ sake?

One man I respect on this forum is msocko, he has the ability to navigate between old school and new technology ( eats the stuff like candy) and has a genuine love of machines and can make em sing a pretty tune.ThumbUp

Thanks for your post Alienwulf!

As Mr. pcombe mentioned, V~Twin Manufacturing is a good source for obsolete Motor Company parts. Unfortunately most of their parts are now made in Taiwan but short of that, the needed parts just aren't out there any more unless you get lucky & find a hidden stash somewhere.
Such a shame that HD is following most of the metric manufacturers sales models in making 10 year old designs obsolete, & therefore no longer selling replacement parts.
Lucky for me the Harley dealer near me does offer vtwin mfg. sales for the "off the computer" model years.
They even offer 10% discount being a "MVP" member to boot.

Thanks fuzzy, one correction though? The Tour- glide ultra and the road- glide are two different critters. Oddly enough I wasn't really looking for an ultra model but it would have cost me more to buy a plain Jane and set it up the way I wanted.

Harley quit making the Tour glide in 1994 wich is why I never bought another Harley over the years. I cant afford them nowadays anyway.
In 1989 I paid $12,500.00 off the show room floor and had to order it through the factory and be ready to lay out the cash immediately upon arrival or loose it and thought that was robbery!

Well I guess I have gotten my moneys worth.

I wonder when Harley is going to trike the Road glide?

A good many dealers won't even touch an EVO powered machine, they only work on twin cams, its a shame they have a shop full of parts changers vs mechanics.

It's all apart of how I don't like the way the motor company has changed I guess:Shrug:

I'm not loving the changes either, I used to think of Harley as the Cadillac of motorcycles. These days I have to rate them as a Chevy, building them more and more disposable vs rebuild-able and solid. They are a huge marketing machine, who else could take an Electraglide Classic, strip off about $1,500 worth of parts and name it a Streetglide, then sell it for more than the Classic and have folks buying the snot out of it. They sell the living hell out of tee shirts and other wearable items, I'll bet that and the service/parts department are the leading profit makers at a dealer.

You got that right. Just like going to a movie theater. The ticket is cheap, but wow! the prices on popcorn and a drink. That's where the theaters make their money.

You know I think I would be hard pressed to come with a Harley T shirt maybe there is one buried in the bottom of a drawer a relative gave as a gift? I just don't wear a Tee shirts unless under a flannel shirt in the winter. I still got old Sturgis shirts.

Man, I just gotta be totally baffled before I will take a bike to the dealer. Most things can be figured out with a motor manual and a few simple diagnostic tools.
I don't own a code reader but my friends 2011 tri glide will tell me what's going on if you know how to access the computer info off the dash.

Msocko sent me to a site when I was working on his tri-glide where it gave me meanings of codes, normally you would need a separate electrical motor manual supplement to get them. I will include them in a separate post for you to encourage saving yourself @120.00 per hr.

There are a hell of allot of repairs that are nothing more than common sense.ThumbUp

Harley Trouble Codes

Harley Trouble Codes
The following procedure will instruct in retrieving and clearing ECM Diagnostic Trouble Codes and TSM/TSSM codes thru the Harley guage cluster as well as a list of codes.

1- Turn Ignition switch to OFF & Run/Stop switch is to Run.

2- Push odometer reset button in & hold.

3- Turn ignition switch to Ignition and release the odometer reset button. Background lighting should illuminate, speedometer needle should sweep its full range and indicator lamps (battery, security, low fuel, check engine and cruise) should illuminate. The word “diag” should then appear.

4 - Push the odometer reset button once and you will see the selection menu "PSSPt" with the first P flashing.

5 - Each letter represents an area of the diagnostics module. The module that is flashing is the one you are going to check. To move from one letter (module) to the next, you push the odometer reset button one time. (from P to S to SP to t and back to P, etc.)
P = ECM/ICM (Electronic Control Module) [EFI] / Ignition Control Module [Carbureted])
S = TSM/TSSM (Turn Signal/ Security Module)
SP = speedometer
T = tachometer

6 - To get the DTC within an area of diagnostics, push and hold the odometer reset button in for 5 seconds and release. If there are any DTC’s the code will be displayed or the word “none” will appear if there are no DTC’s. Push the odometer reset button again to view additional codes if they exist.

7 - Record the codes.

8 - If DTC’s are not to be cleared, Press and release the odometer reset button. Part number of module will be displayed.
NOTE: To determine if a code is current or historic, clear the displayed code by pushing in and holding the odometer reset button ( longer than 5 seconds) until 'clear' comes up. Release the odometer reset button. Turn OFF the ignition switch. Run your bike and shut it down then recheck the DTC’s again by repeating steps 1 to 9. If the code is current it will reappear.

9 – Press and release the odometer reset button to continue to the next module.

10 – Turn Ignition switch to OFF.

On models not equipped with a tachometer "No Rsp" will appear when the tachometer identifier is selected.

"No Rsp" (no response) will also appear if the run/off switch is in the off position when doing this procedure.

Give it a try it's not rocket science just electric foolishness you either got hfsm or tsm system if you don't have an alarm or anti lock brakes you have a tsm. system. The TSM (turn signal module)
Sitting on the bike its under the right hand cover is sort of a long L shape and plugs in to your system and locks in place and can screw with allot of things. Replacement cost? Just a $150.00. Don't ya just love electronics?

Good info pcombe. Hopefully someone with a newer HD will save himself/herself some $$ by self diagnosing their issue, without having to visit the stealer.ThumbUp
It is the way it is now with electronically controlled Harley's, but I darn sure don't have to like em!
Color me Old School...

Wow just got back and see all the great info here now. Been busy riding with a big grin, spent a couple days going thru everything. Got the service manual every thing checks out fine so been riding a lot. Wife agrees " It's good to be back"..lol;)

Talking about co$t for fixing a D Trike. My ridin buddy has a 2014 HD Tri Glide got hit in the back I guess you can say quarter panel next to the trunk door. Women admitted it was her fault and everything. TOTAL co$t from ARROWHEAD HARLEY- DAVIDSON. $ 4980.00 Whole New body and trunk door with labor. Fenders were good as the rest of the trike. I KNOW a body shop would have been a WHOLE lot cheaper. But that what they wanted to do was let the dealer take care of it. No cost to them and only 3 days from dropping it off to pick up.

As stated earlier if it says H-D it's big dollars now. Even the small stuff like oil or plugs with the logo it's a lot more. I got a oil pressure gauge and oil temp coming tomorrow aftermarket still a lot but cheaper. I am just shopping looking for deals. Found a new old stock windshield trim 36 bucks on ebay a new old stock H-D grips I have been wanting for 20.00 dealer war 89.00 there are deals out there if you look hard. :clapping:

I don't mind shopping for deals. Harley can kill your wallet now days. Windscreens from Harley $150.00 on line from another Co I saw for $ 72.00 shipped. :xzqxz:. Do you know much that is in BEER :D money ?
