triglide slip-on mufflers

Personally I believe it started when HD riders thought their oil pressure was
too low when idling at a stop. So they would BLIP the throttle to bring up
the oil pressure. People started to panic seeing the pressure drop almost
to zero. Then with more & more HD riders comming into the fold they
probably heard older HD riders blipping their throttles at a stop and figured
that is what you are SUPPOSE to do. But now you have the nutcakes that
figure they have to REDLINE their tach at every stoplight. Then add the
bar hopping crowd comming home in the middle of the night figuring they
have to keep the motor tached all the way home. So .... Now Cities around
the nation are trying to enforce a Federal Law that has always been on the
books about all bikes have to have the EPA stamp on their mufflers.
They just announced here in Boston the other day of starting to enforce it.

Man did this bring back memories, and I think you are mostly right on the blip the throttle thing. Years ago I had a generator Shovel, basically a Panhead lower end with Shovelhead jugs. At a long stoplight or while sitting at idle the oil pressure would drop, and things would start to rattle around down between my knees. A blip of the throttle would brign back the oil pressure and stop the noise.
There is also the "racerboy" image of revving the engine at a light ready to do the drag race thing to the next block. Did this a lot in cars, still happens but it is hard to hear those 4 cylinder tuner cars over the thumping stereo nowdays.

Thanks. This sounds the most plausible answer to date to me; ...the oil pressure then peer pressure bit.

:D well i have decided to go with the rinehart slip-on mufflers and the race turner and the air breather. its allready got the 103 in it so i'm gong to get all i can out of it. so i guess it time to get out the wallet again !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Had re-mapped last month with new map from HD. Had allot of issues and dealer was sent a new map. Had dealer install pipes and said current map was set right.

Only issue at this point is 29MPG!

Maybe I can sell some on the stock mufflers I have in storage now. Ted

You may have a gold mine with those stock pipes if the law changed nation wide?

It's hard to get the shipping cost if you sell them now.

Most after market pipes will sound good on the 103:D

I don't think they are that loud. They have a nice healthy low rumble sound, but once I am up to speed, I don't really hear them unless I blip the throttle. I didn't want too loud either, so was pleasantly surprised with these. I listened to the rush slip ons on you tube and wasn't real impressed. That is what I originally was going to do. If I am going to spend money on pipes, I want to be heard if I need to be.

YouTube - 2008 Harley Road King Sounds Off with Vance Hines Here is what I got.

I agree with Ironhorse; however, I was looking for something a little louder because I wanted the guy with his window rolled up and hearing aid turned down to hear me (safety issue)! Vance & Hines demoed a set there Oval Slip-ons on a 2 wheel Road Kink at the Laughlin River Run show and they sounded just like what I was looking for…loud but not ear piercing.

What I failed to take into consideration is that on the TG they are mounded under the trunk and sit closer to the ground which tends to muffle the sound and is quieter than on a 2-wheeler!

Something to consider when shopping for trike mufflers!

Stay Safe Out There!!!!

When in a similar situation, I beep the horn (don't stand on it) and give the driver a friendly wave. I think it helps save my hearing as well as the cost of aftermarket pipes.
