Trailer Hitch

That's the hitch doc hitch that is on my trike. It's very heavy duty. Way more than any other hitch I have seen anywhere. Love knowing that mine is so strong. Again, this hitch ball will hit the trunk door with the trailer on the ball. I had to cut my hitch bar and lengthen it and lower it when I put on my bumper and wanted to make it so the trunk door wouldn't hit the lock on the trailer coupler. Still the best hitch I think.

Thanks for the update milemaker, I know the pics they sent me doesn't show a bumper on it and I have a bumper, I know you said you put one on later and it appears to be a custom one instead of the harley one. Maybe they changed the receiver later on, not sure of that, it looks like in the pics they sent me it looks like maybe the door wouldn't hit the ball, with that one pic with the trailer hooked up and the trailer lock it might, not sure I would be getting into the trunk area and I know the trunk would be locked anyway just liked it now, just don't want it popping open so I keep it locked, right now there is nothing in it. I may call hitch doc again and talked to them about this receiver and my bumper, I like the fact it is a vertical one, a little more hidden.

My trunk door didn't hit the ball but it did hit the trailer latch when the trailer was on. I don't know if it would clear your Harley bumper but the one I made wouldn't allow the trailer to mount onto the ball once I installed the bumper. I made my bumper tight to the body with about 7/16 clearance but the round Harley bumper may not be a problem with the radius of the tube.

All in all its not hard to fix the issue if you know someone who can weld or just take it to a weld shop for modification. I have plenty of clearance on my setup now that I extended and lowered it.

I will take a picture of mine with the ball mounted when I get a few minutes to myself.

Retirement is such hard work. LOL.

Thank you for responding back on this, I did call Hitch Doc and they said the trunk door wouldn't hit the trailer ball and they also said it would fit with my bumper, I'm sure it would hit with trailer hooked up but I don't think I would be getting into the trunk if I had a trailer hooked up, if I did I would have to be careful is all. If you get the chance some pics of it with the tongue on it would be nice, I know what you mean about retirement, what I don't get done today always have the next day and so forth LOL. I do have a welder friend, just don't like having to modify something that is new is all, I just wish the chain hook ups were a little higher up underneath so it wouldn't show when the tongue is off, that is the part I don't like, people would maybe know you have a hitch and especially a harley dealer, oh well

Where did you get your cooler carrier ?

I found it on ebay awhile back for 20. shipped, new with the freezer pack and cover. It was for a hidden hitch. I just got the drawbar made. I will make a bigger tray for my bigger cooler then have my powder coater take over.

the long tongue lets you pull it out to open trunk. It also makes a good seat when parked!

I have a Hoover Hitch, but not yet decided on wire harness. I'm thinking I can take a picture of my license plate, laminate it,put it behind plexi in a lighted frame and put on back of cooler. I rode half a day before I realized you could not see a plate.

Another thing I forgot to say, with the tongue coming straight out you can still get into the trunk if needed without the lid hitting the trailer ball, with the high tongue on the rivco it would hit the ball unless you opted with the lower tongue, even the kuryakn one is high, my cousin has this hitch and he has to be careful getting into the trunk and if going down the road and trunk pops open the lid will hit the ball and so some damage, just saying.

My Kurakayn came with velcro wraps to limit the trunk opening with these installed i have clearance on my trunk. But with that said I dont leave the receiver in when not towing a trailer.

harleymystique I pretty sure it will, surprised he didn't answer you, I know my cousin has this hitch and I'm pretty sure he has a bumper, never have seen the bike, but pretty sure it would work, most hitch makers know that people put on a hitch at one time or another and most have a bumper. I'm going with the hitch doc hitch myself and it will work with my stock bumper.

Ok, I had some time and the bike was on the lift today. I put on a trailer coupler I had on the shelf so you can see the clearance I now have after modifying the hitch receiver. Its the Hitch Doc that has the huge 1/4 inch plate and vertical receiver. Its a great hitch and very heavy duty.

I did need to reduce how high the receiver was and also add a couple inches to the length to get it away from the home made bumper. Its now 2" lower and 2" longer than how it was from Hitch Doc. I also made the chain hook mounts bigger, longer and much easier to use with the 5 pin electrical hookup.

See the pictures.

Hitch

I guess I'm the oddball here, but I looked at 2 YouTube videos on how to attach a hitch, and after watching both I built my own. It is sort of patterned after the pics of the Rivco.

Not to pirate the thread but has H-D ever said why they are so opposed to trailers?:(

:)The Mo-Co isn't opposed to trailers .............. As long as it is your scoot that is being trailered. As for pulling a trailer, they are dead set against it I would imagine because they cannot control the way in which the trailer is loaded. Tongue weight is so critical. Especially on two wheels. Over the years I have either seen or chanced upon many a single vehicle accident involving an mc pulling a trailer. Some of those pull behind camper trailers are not light weight.

I know this is a old thread but I am looking at hitches myself.

Trampas

Did you end up getting a Hitch Doc? If so how do you like it and do you have any pics?

Thanks

No I didn't get a hitch yet, when this thread was going on I had a 2016, I now have a 2018 and still don't have a hitch, but if I decide to get a hitch it will be a hitch doc, look at the pics in my post in this thread it will show the hitch from Hitch doc, also hitch doc told me their hitch will work with a bumper, the pics on this post doesn't show a bumper and that is why I called them and they confirmed to me that a bumper will work with their hitch.

Ok

I recently got a 19. Bought it used and already has a bumper. The hitch doc site doesn't list a 19. I will need to get a hold of them and see if they make one or if it's the same as a 18. Thanks for getting back with me.
