Nice pics. I'm sure you like a kid in a candy shop. And I'm sure everyone wouldn't argue if you posted the close ups of your favorite. I know I'd like to see them!

I keyed in on the Rover out of all the great pics, I would also love to see more pics of it:clapping::wave4:
I just love that old stuff, the workmanship & engineering is hard to beat.

this brake setup is actually an upgrade option for the year. the base model brake was only a single sided push into the V of the drive belt. it is located where the first arrow is, that is pointing left to right... the pull on the outer of the V for the belt (second arrow) is the upgrade brake. and improved the bikes braking and the V suffered less warping.

the speedo drive is exposed and quite obvious. i love its beautiful simplicity and built to last for ever design

the front susspension is 2 directional the larger spring is up and down and there is a smaller spring that allows movement front to back. which on the roads of the time was probably a blessing.. when these were new you bought a bike then you picked a seat appropriate for your weight.
seats were weight ranged in 2 stone steps. this is the 12 -14 stone seat.
Oh and that drive belt is an original 100 years old.. Ironically the rover company had an order cancelled because of the drive belt.. the buyer Russian military, thought the drive belt wouldnt last like a chain... i see they were proved very very wrong.
the pedal this side is the rear brake the pedal on the other is the clutch

the owner showing how the headlamp was lit.. the door on the side is access for a match to light the lamp
Note the strange pump arrangement on this side of the tank... this motor has an overhead valve for the inlet and a sidevave exhaust.. there was no plan for upper valve and rocker lubrication, so this pump hand operated is oil into the head for the inlet rocker. needed a pump every half hour .
timing advance is hand opperated also on the right handlebar as is the throttle.

the gear shifter another beautiful and functional sculpture.
also see the plunger for the oil pump (other side) and note the bicycle tire pump on top of tank

That's pretty wild also the timing advance we used to rotate the distributer cap on our old Harleys.

What was the belt made of? I would assume it was leather? and I would have trusted a chain more?

It sure seems strange the braking was by slowing the belt down and I see the corrugations in the belt are designed to allow slippage in one direction. I assume the pad on the brake pinch was also leather or was it a metal foot of some type?

Love the second picture third bike from left.......BSA........A beauty. There are no bikes that have ever appealed to me more than the late 50's early 60's BSA's and Triumphs. That is the reason I'm thinking of going to the new Triumph Bonneville.

I love a bike show and a car show. I had old cars up until I bought the bike, then I never really wanted another one. Well maybe a 39 or 40 ford coupe with a flatty. Some really ice iron at that show. You are a lucky guy that he let you ride his. I wonder if I could have been so generous toward a stranger.

good questions Paul.. shame i dont have any good answers. the brake surface did look fibrous so it may well have been leather. there was definitely something front and back. the brakes would have worn the belt v smooth. yes the oil thing is an odd one so i am glad i got some pics of it... doubt i will see another like it..
yeah Shimpy i love the old Triumphs and Nortons too i see Norton is back in business too they have a factory inside Donnington park, or silverstone, cant recall but its inside the racetrack..
steve on 3 im suprised i got to even touch a bike at a show.., there usually hands off events
Viva the flatties..

we used to call these things water bottles.. very tidy too.

I, too liked the late 50's to mid 70's Brit Bikes. That's why I got a Boneville a few years ago. Could have gotten an original 650 Bonnie or Tiger for half the price, but there is something to be said for nostalgic looks with relatively modern technology. My 2013 Bonneville T100. The most retro of the Bonneville line. IMAG0002 - Copy.jpg It gets a lot of attention (even more than the trike) anywhere it gets parked. . BTW, the word is in 2016 the bonnie will have a new 1100 engine that looks like a unit Triumph (the 2001 - 2015 are styled after the pre-unit motor),ABS mandated by European regs, water cooling and basicaly a new bike but still looking like a vintage Bonnie.
