Took my M8 in for some warranty work

Ok so the trike has been having a idle issue for about 3 weeks,did it the whole time i was in Sandusky for the weekend.Well then Monday i noticed the right cooling fan wasn't coming on.So Monday the wife and I take off and yep it is idling perfect.So when I take it to the dealer on Weds I leave it run till the fans come on and sure enough the right cooling fan isnt on,so I go get the service writer and make him come out and see for himself.

Well today I get a call from the dealer and yep you guessed it the fans worked and they couldnt get it to act up at idle,so they called Harley and was told that they have a new base map for the 17 and that they would down load it.I told them to keep the bike till Monday and see if they could get the fan to shut down.It always seems to work that way for me.

Happens to me too... every time I want to replicate a condition for service it never seems to appear... Just my luck!

Yeah, intermittent problems are a PIA. I've taken a video a few times so I could show it to the service writer, in case it will not replicate at the dealership.

Hopefully the new download will fix the issues for you.

The Harley shop called today and said that I could come get my trike,they had to order a fan.So I spoke to the tech and he said that during the testing procedure that the fans would work every time but when they would start it and let it build heat that the right fan would work some times and sometimes not.He said that the fan was getting power so he had to call HD to get approval for fan replacement,plus he had another 17 that the right fan wasnt working,of course Mother HD claimed that they havent had any issue like that before.So the fan is on order and the bike is idling much cleaner now no irregular idle.

Was talking to him about the release point on the clutch being so far out,he said I could put a master cly off of a 16 because they changed them in 17,but at $ 350 I think I can live with it.So when the fan comes in late next week he said to bring it back and would take a couple hours to change the fan out.

How to check if your fans are working:

Turn cycle ignition to ON position. DO NOT START. Hold throttle to full ON and wait a few seconds .... and the fans will come on (Fan test mode).

Reach down and check fans for operation.

When you shut the bike off when the fans are running at least for me i could hear that one wasn't running so i put my hand next to the exhaust port on the lower fairing and it wasn't blowing.I personally feel that its a bad sensor,not a fan.The reason I think this is because I asked the tech if the fans got their power from the same place during the test and when running and he said no.So I will have them replace the fan and see if this fixes the issue.

I have noticed on my 17 that the fans run longer when trike is shut off and seam to come on more than previous models....
