At the end of August I retired from Chrysler after 35 years on the job. Today I had an interview with Schneider National Trucking. I should be starting there on 11-08-2008. I'm 59 years old and am as nervous as a young teenager going out on his first date. I'm not really starting out the next phase of my life the way I wanted to. Driving a semi, yes. Learning how to drive a semi in the snow, no. I would have liked to have some good dry black top miles behind me before going into the snow and ice. But to my favor, I do know where the brake pedal is, and I have no problem slowing down for safety. Been hanging out on a Trucker Driving website the last couple of weeks.

Have learned a lot. Hope I remember it when it's needed. Was informed today that I have to study for and take the HazMat test before going to Green Bay.

My husband Steve was owner/operator for many years and we were so happy when he was able to retire and sell out. With me working as a school administrator and his driving, we made a good living. We did lots of traveling along the way and I wouldn't change a thing! He is 59, I'm 54 and we have been retired for 4 years--it's been great. Good luck to you on your new venture, hope it works out for you.

Hi Spirit and welcome aboard..! I will tell you that I've been driving a truck for over 30 years and it's not the same as it was..The economic crunch hits transportation very quickly and some make it, some don't. I drive for Averitt Express in Birmingham, AL. and right now I'm glad to have a set run. We have gone up and down along with other companies in this economy.

It sounds like you're doing your homework, so just be very careful and remember you'll learn something new everyday you're on the job. Check out Mattels' post on riding the "Tail of the Dragon".
