To good to be true??

Is this as good a deal as I think it is?

1999 GL1500 with MotorTrike kit.
64K; 8.5 out ot 10; bells and whistles
and farkles. Beauty of a trike. Guy says
he is asking for payoff. I can verify
mechanical condition with local shop
where he bought it used and has had
it worked on.
Asking $10,800.
That doesn't sound totally unreasonable.
My 1999 Valk F is worth 4-5000 as it sits 95% done with 14K known miles
Add a kit of unknown value and age??

Id look into it carefully, just due to the bikes age.

If you can verify mechanical condition and cosmetics, sounds like a good deal. Cost me (round numbers) $13k to convert a '95 Wing I already owned. Obviously my "kit" is newer, but $10.8k for the whole "package" sounds very attractive - if everything checks out. Good luck...

Yup to good to be true. Looks great. Rides and handles great.
Ran like crap. Left fork leaks badly. Rear brakes hardly work. A real shame. Lack of proper care. Maybe he'll get his price, I dunno. But he was insulted when I said it rode great but ran bad.
Oh well. - Sirkitrider

Well, at least you now know. Too bad as well. Sure sounded like a good deal.

That sounds like the Trike that is in our local paper.....It does look good in the ad but the running part is probably the carbs.

just need to be cleaned which is no problem.

I don't know about the fork leaking but would think a seal would take care of that......Randy Copeland that used to work for the local Honda Dealer could take care of both very reasonable......

Hey Jack! Yeah it's gonna get 60ish around someday soon maybe?

Saturday???

Yeah it is the one in the H-C. Maybe MY expectations were a little to high? Still might be good price if you were willing to have the work done. And I might. But I doubt it. I figure another $1200 to rebuild forks - I'd want Progressive Spring, the carb work - brakes prolly not a big deal, complete tune up, change fluids, belts maybe? The works really.

And, it's on it's third starter in the fours years since he has owned it.

??? Concerns me about electrical issues. AND it was at the top of my budget already. Like steak ... can better afford baloney!

I know Randy C. He got my 1200 going after I bought it from a year (or so) in the PO's shed. Great mechanic and reasonable prices.

My ole 1200 ain't much to look at BUT she runs great. Maybe I'll just get a rake kit for the ole gal??
If the bike has been sitting, even for a mere 6 months, the "poor" running condition, and the lack of rear brakes is a very common "issue". If you leave your lawnmower sitting over the winter with fuel in the carbs, it runs like well, you know what when you go to start it again. The new fuels used today enhance this as it "gums up" even faster than older fuels. (This "new and improved fuel has been the primary cause of many engine repairs over recent years on motorcycles.)

The rear brake issue is so commonplace, that it was even mentioned in the latest "tech Q&A" in the Wing World magazine. If a 1500 (especially a trike) sits for a period of time, you will have to re-bleed the rear brakes (which includes the left front caliper on the Motor Trike conversions).

Leaking forks is something that's almost an "accepted" maintenance point on any motorcycle. If you remove the fork and take it to a shop to be rebuilt, you'll save a large part of the cost involved as well; assuming you don't change the seal and check the internals yourself that is.

A great running trike under $13,000 is a great deal. I would pay $8,000 just for the rear portion and the extras. If you can not afford it that is another story. For $10,000 ( I would offer $9,500) you can afford to put $2,000 into it. He is probably burning out starters because the carbs are so bad and it needs plugs air cleaner etc. so he cranks it more than the 15 sec allotted time ( a Gold wing should never be forced to crank the starter more than 10 sec. Rear brakes are drum bet they are built up with rust. Carb cleaning new progressive springs with seals, and plugs and air cleaner.. $600 to $1,000 tops.
It is a desirable 99 the last real year for the 1500. Rumor has it the ones sold in 2000 were left overs.

Thanks guys all for your input. Haven't ruled out completely. The guy is pretty firm on his price and you can't blame him for that. But he is in complete denial about the work that needs done because his mechanic, who sold him the trike, tells him that it's in GREAT shape.- Sirkitrider

If you're seriously considering the bike, I would tell him, as a condition of purchase, you want the bike/trike checked over by an impartial qualified mechanic. This is a great way to protect you, make you aware of any possible issues that you may not see or know to look for; and as well, will help open his eyes to issues with the bike he's "refusing" to see. It may cost a few hundred to do so, but better than being blind sided with a repair bill of a few thousand dollars after the purchase.

You may even be able to get him to agree to a "deal" concerning the cost of the check-up. IF the bike is in great shape/condition, and you purchase, the price can be rolled into the buy or something similar?

Well I would offer the 9500 in cash and tell him there is all I can afford , and see what he'll do when the cash is showing in hand. You don't have nothing to loose, If he still won't budge, bring your own wrench to check it out and go from there. If this deal is meant for ya,you'll get it for 9500 if not and you probly saved yourself money in the long run. Good luck !!

I wonder if that is the Trike the local Harley shop had last fall. A friend of mine tried it out and said it ran like crap. I'm sure the carbs just needed cleaning and I also remember he said something about a loud muffler of some sort on it......

I'm a doubt'it Hoghead. That place north of town, (insert initial & intial here), known for holding bikes hostage in their repair shop for month's on end is "his" mechanic. I haven't talked with anyone happy with their service. I called them before taking my 1200 to Randy. They would not give me an estimate OR an estimate of when they could start work on it. While mine was at Randy' some guy brought in a GL1000 that had been at that place for 2 months and ran worse after he picked up! Cooling my jets for now. Seeing what happens. Maybe he sells it, maybe not. - Sirkitrider

I know where u are talking about. I live about 1/2-1 mile from there and he is awful high on everything he does. I have heard things leave there that was not right but they are still in business.....I actually seen that trike over there sometime back but didn't pay any attention to it.....

Yeah owner says it was there for 2 months over the winter getting a starter.
2 months! AND it was the third starter in the four years he has owned it. Something NOT right about that. Soured me a little bit on it's maintance history. - Sirkitrider
