tire balance question

Put a new front tire on my recently acquired '08 gl 1800 yesterday. Took the wheel off and went to a local shop to change tire, picked it up and went home to reinstall. When rolling it to the trike to put wheel back on, I was hearing a swish noise like there were balancing beads in tire. I had not asked for balance beads so ruled that out.

I also noticed that the shop had installed four 1/4 oz weights right under the valve stem...their balance job.

Curiosity got the best of me so I started digging around on the web and found the centramatic balancing system.....went to my trike to see if by chance it was already installed....sure enough the centramatic balancing system had been installed on my trike by previous owner.

So my question to you guys.......is this a problem....centramatic balancer installed .....and the four 1/4 oz weigts also stuck on the rim? Should I remove the stick on weights or will the two balance systems work together?

My inclination is to remove the stick ons but would like to hear input from you guys.

I hate to answer a question with another question but in this case it's necessary. Did the individual leave the centramatic disc on the wheel while he balanced the tire? That would explain the large amount of weight in a rather curious location. If so I'd pull those weights in a heart beat. I've never used centramatic balancers.

I use Dyna Beads in conjunction with a conventional balance. As the tire wears it will get out of balance so my take on the matter is to add an ounce of beads to compensate for ware. The down side to that is with the Dyna Beads in, the tire can not be correctly balanced again. I'd expect the same is true is true with the centramatic disc.

That sounds like way to much "lube" was used to mount the tire. That "stuff", IMHO, is not needed and should not be used to mount a motorcycle tire!

Remove the weights, not needed, if you have centramatics. That's what they do, balance the tire!!!!!

Further more, if one uses beads or the centramatics or RideOn, there should be no reason to "balance" the wheel/tire!!!

I have the Centramatic balancers on my Wing. I would remove the weights. Don't know how he balanced tire with Centramatics installed. Regardless, take the weights off. If there is a vibration or "bounce" after removing weights then I would suspect a faulty tire.

Keep in mind that the balancers have to warm up in cold weather (not long) and really only work above 25 mph when there is sufficient centrifugal force to make them work .

kinda what I thought guys, I have to believe they "balanced" the tire with the centramatic plate on the wheel, Ive only owned the trike a couple weeks so I wasn't aware of it, Im gonna remove the weights today. Thanks for the feedback

Not trying to be picky here but, you stated above, "... the tire with the centramatic plate (singular)....". There should be two balancers on the front wheel; one on each side.

Let us know how it comes out.

Which brings up another question: Why does it two for the front wheel of a motorcycle???

Figured it was grammatical but I wanted to be sure you were shortchanged by the previous owner. I actually heard this happened one time. Glad it worked out for ya! :clapping:
