Yesterday, I was running errands using the trike for transport. At the first stop, I realized I had forgotten my keys and cell phone. It kinda chapped my behind, because I didn't want to go back home to get the keys to lock the motorcycle. Instead, I left the trike in reverse (Champion mechanical reverse) when I parked, with the hope that if somebody actually tried to steal the trike, the thief would not be familiar with the reverse setup, and just continuously stall the trike trying to leave in first gear. It worked!

I know, I'm lazy and should have returned home for the keys, but this worked in a pinch, and I'm thinking of adding this to my regular parking routine as an added deterrent, along with the fork lock, ignition lock and HD anti-theft system. Does anyone else do this, or is it overkill and a problem waiting to happen?

I ride a Yamaha 1700 road star trike.
Fully insured, always remove key.

It is not a Harley. Looks like one, sounds like one.

My trike is 12 years old and doesn't have a parking brake so I use the reverse when I park, no problems doing that. I think the added benefit of a thief not knowing how to take it out of reverse is great.

I have made this suggestion a few times, install a mico lock. It locks the rear brakes and you can put the switch wherever you want to make it a theft deterrent. I put one on my trike because I don't want to put that strain on reverse. It' s fairly easy to install, and I have had mine for almost two years with steady use, no problems. No I do not sell them or benifit in any way from sales of these items.

When you say "It worked!", are you saying someone did try to steal your trike and didn't get away because you had it in reverse or you just saying your trike was still where you parked it??

Sorry to be unclear - the trike was there when I returned. :GL1800:

I was told by my installer that if I accidentally put the trike in reverse and first gear at the same time it would lock the transmission and it would have to be disassembled to repair and possibly cause major damage???

No need to be sorry, I'm just glad no one messed with your bike. I've lost several hotrods to those F*!#ing thief's, but never a bike. The only thing close to a bike I lost was one of those fat tired things(2 big balloon tires) that a lot of us used for pit-bikes.

I don't know what reverse kit you have, so I cannot comment on your situation, but, I have inadvertantly placed the tranny in first gear while also in reverse. The bike stalled immediately - it actually shocked me, until I realized why it stalled. No problems getting into the proper gear...back to neutral, out of reverse, then into the proper gear, and down the road.

If someone wants your TRIKE, it does not matter how much SECURITY you have. A key only keeps an HONEST person HONEST.

I fully believe in making a thief's job as tough as possible. Anything that will slow him down, works in my favor - time is on my side in a parking lot environment.

Back in the day on my Ultras and now on my Tri Glide I put a disk lock on each front disk, throttle/brake lever lock, and cover in addition to the std fork lock. I also have the alarm/siren. I only do this on overnight/motel trips. At home just one disk lock and fork lock.

I'm a big fan of disc locks! I use them front and rear on the two wheelers, especially on out-of-town overnights outdoors.

If someone steals a trike I just figure they needed it more than I did! ThumbUp

Insurance and not leaving the keys in it are about all you can do... the old saying if they want it they're going to take it no matter what you do. :AGGHH:
