It was either late 1973 or 1974 and I was in San Miguel, El Salvador. Just had finished having breakfast and walked out into the street. Saw the most beautiful motorcycle I had ever seen.

It was a GL 1000 pre-release model. I was drooling over it when the rider came out. We had a long talk and he told me his name: Robert Smith. Then he said you may know me as Bob Smith, I did not react. He finally said I am Buffalo Bob Smith from the Howdy Dowdy show and he was.

I will never forget seeing that bike and meeting Mr. Smith. In those days, it was safe to ride through Mexico and get to Panama. Would not mind shipping my wing to Guatemala and riding south, but mama has other ideas.

Just a memory from an old man.
