The Final Warranty Job

Got my Tri Glide back from the Dealer yesterday. I had taken it in January 3rd for excessive top end noise. I had just mentioned to the service writer that I had never been happy with the rear brakes. They squeaked when they got hot and they shook the front end if you used them to slow down without using the front brake too. Felt like the rear rotors may be warped.I really wasn't expecting them to do anything with the rear brakes since I had 12,200 miles on them(They all do that or could not duplicate the problem), but much to my surprise when I pick it up they had put new lifters in the engine for the top end noise, put new brake rotors and pads on the rear and also tightened the steering head bearings. They did all this at no charge in Warranty. Looks like there are still some good Dealers left out there.

Great to hear that report!!!! It is wonderful to get these positive comments. Sadly, we all tend to mention a negative experience, but often forget to give the positive feedback!

I've been complaning about my brakes squealing ( front and back ) since I picked up the trike. The local dealer keeps saying harley knows nothing about this -- when I had the bike in virginia I talked to two dealers down there and they said it was the first time they have heard of a brake squealing problem. The trike only has 2300 miles on it. If the weather ever warms up a little I'll have to do something about it myself.

Call the Harley Customer service line in your handbook..They will give you a reference number and then have the dealer bring in a rep from Harley to evauate the brakes.

Your dealer is a keeper because they either got creative with the brake replacement or they ate the cost. My dad talked to the dealer and had no luck so he tried HD customer service, they said the brakes were a wear item and not covered under warranty. When he mentioned there were dealers replacing brake pads and rotors they said HD wasn't paying for it.

If I were in America, and I had some trike buddies near by, I would put out a Saturday morning alert and have a trike convoy visit the dealer with a cake inscribed "Thank you to a Dealership team who still understand the word "CUSTOMER!"
Yes it would have to be a big cake, but then there would be a lot of Trikes! Tell him you are coming with a surprise and get the local paper and TV station to report it!
Then send a copy to those other dealers. Some only know to operate by the rules, those that make a difference say "How can we make this better?!"
Just a thought.

I've got a 2009 Ultra Tri-Glide. Rear brakes have been a problem since day one. I now have 15000 miles and two sets of pads. Dealer won't fix under warranty, pads are not covered. At 50 mph it woud take at least a football field to come to a stop useing just the rear brakes. Going to convert to drum brakes as soon as this set wears out. My o6 Ultra Lehman conversion had drum brakes, just loved them.

It was never intened to stop using just the rear brakes. I think this may be one of the reasons HD is getting a lot of complaints about rear brakes. I think quite a few people just shove on the rear brake peddle and figure thats good enough. How many people know 75% of your stopping power is in the front brakes? In essence if one is just using the rear brakes they are only getting 25% of the available stopping power, no wonder there are issues. I use both front and back brakes when I stop, if I want to I can also lock up the back tires with the rear brakes, tried it last year and boy are the back tires loud when they holler. To see if they squeal less I installed Lyndall gold pads on the rear of both mine and my dads Triglides. His 2009 had 20,000 miles on the rear brake pads and could have gone another 5,000 - 8,000 miles. Mine had 10,000 miles on them and had plenty of pad left also. My biggest complaint with the rear brakes is they squeal, which I haven't owned a Harley yet that didn't have a brake squeal issue with stock pads.
