The end to tour pack damage

This is what I have used for years, the tether is so dangerous, when it breaks, lots of expensive tour pak damage!
I also took off the stock cheap tin hinges, replaced with the solid upgrade hinges.
This is worth alot less than a damaged tour pack.

Ultra Tour-Pak Brace

After reading about the tether on the site I had already replaced mine with a retractable tether. I told my wife to be careful when opening it that they were breaking guess what on a ride to Mich. it broke. Lucky no damage might be because I had replaced the hinges with heavier ones. Now have the ultra tour pack brace it is great.

Man, I must be doing something right. I haven't or know anyone else who has had one break. I now have the one with the automatic take up reel.
How do they break? I can't imagine that steel cable breaking.

everyone i ever knew of, was the capture at either end, was the fail point.

I can smell the beancounters hand in this one.

I'm kinda gentle with mine-I'll hold the lid until it stops and don't let it bang at fully open like I see a lot of people do.
Since this is the first time I've heard of this I guess I'll keep an eye on them now - just in case. ThumbUp

I agree with Gary..I hold the cable as I open up the lid and had no problems..But then again not to say the wind will not grab it one day..But still have to be careful saves some bucks down the road I guess..

I installed one of these. My wife said she wanted it because sometimes the lid would fall on her. The screw did come out once and the lid fell open, I caught it so not damage. I put lock tight on it now....

I said the same thing but when it happens might be to late. I told my wife to be careful and the second she was't the tether broke. Like I said I was lucky could have cost alot more than ultr tour pack brace. Wasted the price of the retractable that broke. Everything we do to these costs alot just would like to do it once!!!

I had the retractable tether break at the lower connection on 5/22/12...normally hold the lid, but when the cable retracted it startled me and I let go of the lid. Large (and long) crack around the front chrome hinge. Called my HD dealer and they spent two months jacking me around saying might not be covered by extended warranty....yep, they were right. Was accused of overloading the luggage rack...NOT cause it's only on there for looks. I ride a Tri-Glide that has ample storage. Extended warranty only covers mechanical/electrical issues. Cost $432 for replacement lid and $210 to transfer everything from my cracked lid. Still pi$$ed:mad:

I really dont see how that device will stop the tour pak from cracking??

It may give it more support..

When a friend's Ultra tour pack lid cracked because the cable broke, I added a short length of chain from Lowe's. $4.25. Probably doesn't look nearly as bitchen as those retractable, or lever lid holders, but I saved about 70 bucks. When the lid flops, the giant hundred dollar hinges don't crack, the lid does.

I'll probably be the next guy it happens to for saying this, but I'm a little at a loss to see how the stock cable breaks using just reasonable care. Does anybody just throw it open?

And if it's windy outside, you'd know it in advance I would think, and exercise a little caution. Just me, but it looks like a solution in search of a problem.

Now I will say that the factory cable always looping down outside the tour pak in a nice arc across the passenger seat back is irritating, and I suppose the tether would fix that. But I refuse to give the MoCo the satisfaction of having me pay for that so I just hold it inside the box when closing the lid.

I got mine and it works well.

Heard about a CVO Ultra snapping the hinges right off with a huge chunk out of the bottom part of the tour pack. Now that is expensive right there.

Got my new tour pac lid today and new retractable tether. My first one broke at the bottom end causing it to fall and crack over the front hinge. Saw the link on the tour pac brace and have ordered one. Not going to take a chance on the retractable one.

That's a good idea Screwball.....I had the dealer round up a stock tether for temporary replacement.

Yup spent $70 but figured that is about the cheapest thing you can buy for a Harley so took advantage of it.LOL:laugh:

I need did not mean to imply to run out and buy the brace just thought it could save you money in the long run. If screwball way works by all means use it. Maybe the original tether is not breaking mine was the retactable one.
