Tank fillup

Anyone having any problems with filling up the tank with gas? I have to shake the bike to get the tank filled up, seems like it has a air blockage. It's on a 2015 HD Trike.

Nature of the beast. Tank was built to be refueled leaning, on the side stand. We're level, so it behaves a little different. Just give it a little hip check, don't have to slam it or anything, to "burp" it until she's full. If I'm in a hurry, I don't bother and get upwards of 170 miles, if I burp it several times and keep topping off, gets up over 190 or rarely over 200. If I'm not planning on going out in the boonies where gas stations are sparse, doesn't really make a huge difference.

Gas tanks (Cars and bikes) were not meant to be filled to the brim. Gasoline expands with heat. It comes out of the ground cold, and expands in your tank when it gets warm. If you look down the filler you will see where the filler extends down into the tank to stop the gas from filling too full. Just because the book says you have a 6 gallon tank you can put 6 gallons in.

I have a 16 and zero issue so far other than the cap which i fixed.

It is a pain to fill the tank with the bellows type nozzles...
I'll only fill the tank to the very top when i know i'll be riding at least 20 miles or so before i have to stop and park....On one ride that i do a few times a month ' I Will always stop at one particular station and they have the NON-Bellows nozzle and with that its easy to fill the tank.. So much so that on one occasion i went 220 miles before i gassed up again..

I want my 6 gallons, dag nabit.
Sometimes 6.1 if really running on fumes. Very consistent. Fills fine up to 5.5 gal mark. Then I just have to bop...bop...bop, last half gallon in. If it is a high speed pump, I don't drive myself crazy.

i just keep my shin againest the floorboard and give it alittle shake as i fill it up.

Starting in 2014 HD finally has accurate fuel gauges. This appears to have come at the cost of making it difficult to get the last 1/2 gallon into the tank.

This applies to the Trikes AND to the 2 wheel bike equally.

Only way I've found is to bump it several times to get it to burp a few times to get the last 1/2 gallon in.

As Screwball & rhino 2 mention, I do NOT do this if I am not going to be riding at least 20 miles after filling up.

I have a 2013 with a 1.5" tank lift. I just fill to the top and shake the trike and the gas goes down and lets me put more in. I usually do this two or 3 times before the tank is full

I filled my trike today after the low fuel message came on the radio,it showed around an 1/8 tank,i always fill my tank slowly,after the gas reached about mid way up the filler neck i tried this burping method,it did burp a small amount but it lowered less than a coffee cup full of gas it took 4.9 gallons to fill it think i will stick with filling it slowly.

funny to see this post. I was just wondering...
I have a 2010 and in the past when I filled it, my gauge would say I had a 198 miles range, sometimes 212 depending on how I forced in the gas. I've noticed lately that it maxes out 175 miles or so. Today I ran it all the way down and it filled up with only 148 mile range.

any ideas?

When I fill up with fuel, the range mileage has varied between 210 and 175. It seems to vary with the speed that I've been riding and weight on the trike.
Is the range mileage calculated by computer using the amount of fuel along with riding speed and conditions or strictly the amount of fuel added to the tank ?
