I was wondering if a stock filter would flow enough air,if the backing plate was less restrictive like the s/e set up.I know after market filters flow more, but is it neccessary? Only thing done to trike is slip on mufflers.

The stock filter can flow a bit more but I wouldn't recommend you fiddling with it unless your prepared to get a tuner and make the necessary changes to the air fuel mixture to richen up the even leaner AFR more air will cause. Another down side is if you open up the air box you will allow a path for water which over time will cause the filter to deteriorate.

I've have yet to pick it up,it's still at the dealers. Will be until this snow goes away. They installed the s/e tuner & did the basic down load.Once i get it home i'll do the air cleaner & pipes.Forgot to mention i have a catless header pipe to install also. Thanks for your reply.

Which tuner did they use?

Street Performance Tuner

Or the Performance tuner

If they used the Street tuner your very limited an what can be done, basically all it can do is upload canned emissions compliant maps with no provisions for modifying those maps. If you got the pro tuner then it'll allow you to do pretty much anything you can think of.

I got the 2nd one 32109-08c.I had one on my 11 triglide. It's all confusing to me,but i like playing around with it.I didn't have the last one long enough to get good with it.Matter of fact probably forgot what lil i knew.

What is "enough"? If you are happy with the power you have now, then no need to change anything.

I just had a Tri-Glide on the Dyno this last week.

It has aftermarket slip-ons

We tested a bunch of different air filters, below are some of the results

With the stock AC it had 66.63 HP and 86.32 Torque
With one aftermarket AC it had 74.03 HP and 93.50 Torque
With another aftermarket AC it had 75.55 HP and 97.30 Torque

So, yes it makes a difference, but is it something you "need" to do...only you can answer that.

Kevin, did you do the runs with the Trike tuned for mods or were all three runs on the same stock tune?

Your in good shape then, I was hopping you did have the 1st one, its a stinker.

Kevin,i understand the other filters flowing more, but they also have a less restrictive backplate. My thoughts were the backplate made more of a difference then the filter element itself.Any cfm over a certain # would be more the the engine could use.

Since my TG is a 2013, I replaced the stock a/c unit with a take off unit from a 2014. The 2014 seems to be more capable of more air flow than the 2013 unit. Would I have to get a tuner to adjust any settings? everything else is stock. It really seems to run better with the 2014 a/c on it.

Good point! The tunes were different.

On the Stock A/C the tune was a Dealer tune for TG's with stock A/C and Slip-ons. (not a "dealer download")

On the 2 Aftermarket A/C's the tune was a Power Vision that started with a Fuel Moto tune that had been modified by multiple "autotune" sessions.

Arnie, No doubt you will flow more air with a less restrictive backplate. I have done many pulls on different bikes (no TG's) and the absence of the stock backplate will give a measurable increase in HP & Torque, but the stock filter, even with no backplate, does not give the same power as an open A/C system.

I have never done a comparison between the stock filter with no backplate and an "open filter" (like a K&N) with a backplate to see which is a better combo.

Like M3 said though, a stock filter with no backplate is vulnerable to water.

Your 2013 is already EPA lean, and the 2014 filter does flow more air, so you are even leaner. Do you "need" to make a change? Seems there are large variances in what people experience TG to TG. I would, or, at the least, I would monitor my oil temps and head temps, and if they were out of line, then you will know if you need to or not.
