I have never carried any extra fuel but have considered it. I know there are some places this might be a reasonable thing to do.
I realize it should be done in a safe responsible manner. What do you use to carry extra fuel and where would one obtain these containers? I expect maybe to hear some strong opinions on this subject and thats ok.
Any input will be appreciated.
Thanks

Just remember a GAL of fuel is = to on stick of TNT. With that said I would buy the emergency fuel they sell in auto part stores it is only 1 qt. better yet go to Lowe's and buy 7' of 1/4 in clear plastic hose.

Rider Rick I would discourage that. Gas tanks meet guidelines for a reason.

Best way is in an auxilary gas tank. There are several on the market. However if you MUST carry extra fuel, take a look at MSR camp stove fuel containers for liquid fuel -- like Coleman fuel. I carried 'em for years when I could still back pack & never had a leak. I also carried one last summer on the Ultra for my stove "gas" & had no problems over almost 6,000 mi. In this capacity, I personally feel they're safer than the small propane bottles. They're a one piece spun aluminum bottle that's nearly indestructable, which uses an "O" ring sealed top. The big one is 33 oz @ about $20. They're available at the better sporting goods stores. The only place I can fine 'em online right now is Bass Pro, but Sports Authority & Campmor usually carry them. Keep in mind, these bottles are most dangerous when empty because they're still filled with explosive vapor, so if you must carry them, refill 'em as soon as you can.

Try doing a "google" search for "motorcycle auxillary fuel tanks". Tour Tank is just one of many you'll find. These are all add on tanks. If you're just ordering your trike kit, some kit manufacturers have aux tank options for the GWs -- seem to feel HD's have enough gas, I guess. Keep in mind, if you ever want to make an official Iron Butt Assn ride, they have an 11.5 gal limit on how much fuel a competitor can carry.

Joe -- do you have the aux tank in your Roadsmith? I think I'm seeing a fuel cap just ahead of your trunk opening. If so, how does it tie into the main tank? It looks to be much lower than the main tank. Does it use a fuel pump? Since my HD is an '06, it only has a 5 gal tank & a couple of extra gallons out West here in the wide open spaces would sure come in handy.

Nope, no aux. tank. That is the knob to open the trunk.

NM I adapted a 2008 6 gal tank to my 07. It was a little work. Had to spacer the front mount a little. Had to pound in a spot on the left underside to clear the upper motor mount. Then I had to make a through bolt for the rear hold down. Had to purchase a seat for a 2008. Last had to adapt a new rear hold down for the 2008 seat. A little work but I feel better with the 6 gallons. I can safely go about 160 before stopping, to play it safe with the different fuel mileage conditions.

John, The common equation is that 1 gallon of gasoline is equivilent to 14 sticks of dynamite.

It is not smart to carry gasoline in a non-approved container..

Good luck in what ever U do..
