Well I have tried this before.
With what has got on in my life over the last year,I had got up to smoking over two packs a day, besides getting on the expense side I was coughing a lot.
I have to use a c-pac machine at night and I can tell you waking up in the middle of the night coughing your head off with that mask on is not fun.
So far I have gone five weeks with out a smoke.
Started out useing the nicoret gum,the first week I must have been going through one ever twenty min.
Now down to one or two a day, worst thing is in the morning when I first get up.
Another thing I used was lemon drops.
While the coughing has not gone away complety as yet,it has reduced a lot and I am sleeping better,JUST HOPE I CAN STAY WITH IT THIS TIME!
:pray::pray::pray::pray::pray:

a frend of mine told me to look:AGGHH: at my wife and kid and grandkid and say GOODBY when you lite up after looking at there face for a day or so YOU WILL WONT TO STOP :AGGHH:good luck

I feel your pain Jim. I smoked one to two packs a day since I was 13....Last Feb. was three years since I quit. Unfortunately I swapped one bad habit for another as I used smokeless tobacco to wean myself off the smokes and I believe it's more addictive than cigarettes!! You can do it Bud!!! And I assure you it will get easier with time. The coughing will stop as soon as your lungs clean themselves up. You will sleep better, have more energy and just feel a lot better in general. Hang tough....I'm rootin' for Ya!!!!! ThumbUp

Good luck and I hope you succeed. I was up to almost 3+ packs a day. When I woke up coughing at night I would get up and lite up another one.

I tried quiting several times before but never made it. I said I would quit when they got up to .50 cents a pack. Well, it was up to .75 when I went cold turkey. Hard a first but I haven't had one since 1982 and haven't regretted for a minute. Niether will you...........:beerchug:

GOOD LUCK JIM!!! You can do it!! ThumbUp It's hard to quit - I've tried many times, and about ready to try again soon. Just remember - nobody has ever died from quitting smoking, none that I've heard of anyway. Killing someone else? That's a different story....

Hang tough! It will be a hard road ahead.

A decade after I stopped I still "wanted" a cigarette when I'd have a drink in a bar. Twenty years later...whew, that guy's cigarette really stinks. ;)

If you can hang in there long enough, the cravings will end and you'll likely be around longer for those you love.

We need to do this thing together!!! I have been trying yet again to quit. I quit several times for two years. But then the first really big stressful thing in my life and I am right back.......it SUCKS!

Proud of you Jim! Keep it up.

I smoked for more years than I want to think about. Some of you might remember sensen that came in small sealed packs, it tasted like something I hated. What I did to quit was take a fourth of a teaspoon of sensen and put it under my tongue every time I wanted a smoke. I spose I could have used sheep turds but the sensen did the trick.

MY TWO CENTS WORTH!I haven't smoked one in 5 1/2 years Smoked three packs(a day) the day before I ouit.I still want one everyday. The cravings don't come as often or last as long but still have to deal with it.It is a lot like being an alcholic it is the next one that you have to do with out.Pulling for you hope for the best.Easy does it

Congrats Jim I'm sure it's been alot tougher then you are letting on. Keep up the good work.

something that really helped me was someone told me to focus on the length of time the "spike urges last" you will notice that the spikes begin to get shorter and less severe as each day goes by
15 years now.

Jim, Best wishes! While I've never smoked, I understand how difficult it must be. It is so great that so many people are sending their best wishes. My husband quit 35 yrs. ago, and has said that there have always been times when he'd like a cigarette, but not nearly as much as when he first was quitting.

I can understand what you are feeling. Its natural, i was also a smoker but unfortunately i had to quit it. Even now anyone smoke in front of me its like the cigarette calling me and if i don't take it i will die. But i have to ignore, i have no option.

Good job Jim, you have made it the point where you can say, "I was not smoking this time last month''. I applaud you because I know what you are going through, my attempts lasted anywhere from 1 day to 2 weeks. It has been 7 years and there are still times that I would very much like to have a smoke, but I know that if I do I'm in trouble.

During the first several weeks there wasn't 5 minutes that went by that I didn't think about 'having just a couple of puffs'. It does get easier with time and one thing that helped me was to make a few changes. Normally I would drink coffee with cream and sugar, while quitting I drank it black and still do. Changed my habits, use to read the paper with (many) smokes and coffee, now I take a walk. I just tried to take myself out of the environment that I smoked in.

Keep it up, it is tough, but worth the misery you are within a short while of controlling it rather than the other way around.

I kicked the habit 3 years ago....smoked for 41 years.....feel alot better since i have quit. the food tastes better ,my lungs feel better, i don't have to go out in the cold every 1/2 hour to light up, my clothes smell better, the family says I smell better, plus i am saving lots of money, close to 300 dollas a month...that makes my bank account smell better...lol

I quit cold turkey after 41 years ,so if I can do it ,,,,,YOU CAN TOO.......GOOD LUCK

Know the Deal well myself. Cold Turkey is by far the best and ONLY way to truly "Quit". I wish you all the best in that and hope it comes to pass for you.
Without pouring out an Auto-Biography,,,, I had to give up many compulsions and "habits". It took SEVERAL attempts (All but the last were half-A$$@! & feeble) and failures (all MY fault). Some were harder than others and some I swore were impossible. After all that, Nicotine was the least (and least harmful of the Devils) to be slated to go. I was not ready and still am not.
Tried & Proven Fact: Unless you are Sincerely ready and willing to go to ANY length, it just can't happen other than temporarily at best.

That being the case and knowing that Smoking was messing me up; I looked for a "safer" way to administer the Nicotine Fix. Vapor or E-Cigs was the answer. After smoking 2+ Packs per day for over 30 years, I have been using the Electronic Nicotine Delivery Devices for over 2 years with no deviation or return even for one puff. Still addicted to Nicotine so not bragging or grand-standing at all. Still got a Camel on my back. However, just inhaling the Nicotine and the natural flavors in a Glycol solution vapor. No other carcinogens or chemicals or best of all,,, NO Smoke. Can definitely feel the difference physically. Plus, No stench, no 2nd hand smoke, no trips outside every 15-30 minutes and so on and so forth. Also am only spending about $10 per week on average as opposed to $45 plus before.

Again, some say it is a Cessation Aid and have used it that way and God Bless them and more power to them. Hope it holds. I know and have heard of People that slowly weaned themselves off the E-Juice containing Nicotine to that that only has natural Flavors. I can buy that working if you are so inclined. Me, not gonna lie to myself or anyone. I am not ready nor willing to give up the Nicotine yet. The first 2-3 days was a tad difficult while I got used to the taste change. But, with the physical action of drawing on it, the similar taste, the look of the Glycol vapor, the intake of Nicotine and all I got used to it and seemed normal after a week. Now, can't stand the smell of smoke like a typical former-smoking Nazi :D (all in good fun folks).

IF you want to quit smoking BUT can't kick the Camel of Nicotine off your back,,, I HIGHLY suggest you try the Vapor or E-Cigs. I used Blu-Cig Brand and now have been using a Vapor Pen ("Buck Naked" Brand believe it or not) with E-juice for last 6 months and like it better than true E-Cigs and it is about one-third the cost of those. Either way much better for anyone than actual Smoking.

Again and please don't misunderstand-Quitting IS the BEST answer. If you can Quit and stay Quit-Do It!
If you can't but want to get your "Fix" in a safer way with a more healthy Delivery Means with much less negative implications and nasty lethal consequences,,, give the Vapor or E-Cigs a real sincere try.

Not preaching or telling you or anyone what to do or what will or won't work for you or them. Merely sharing my personal experience with the Smoking Demon, What I did, and What it's like now. Take it or Leave it in whole or part as you will.

FYI & for the Record: I got NO stake or Stock in these Companies nor do I sell the stuff.

For me it was simple = wellbutrin. Doctor said my insurance wouldn't pay for Zybam, but would with Wellbutrin. I tried all the other cures-cold turkey, patch, hypnosis - nothing. Not even all the well intentioned tips did any good. I enjoyed it too much.
I still hang around friends that still smoke just for a brief smell.....for old tiles sake. :)

Everybody is different so the pill won't work on everyone. I did for me and with out any withdrawal or side effects. I didn't have a cough or breathing problems - the cost was what finally made me stop plus the limited places you could smoke.

I smoked since I was 11 and quit in 2001 after 46 years. I enjoyed smoking 95% of the time. I quit when it was $1.75/pk. Now I throw that money in a jar and it pays for my vacations each year.
Every once in a while after a big meal I still would love to light one up. :)

The one thing that bugs me the most now is ex smokers that preach endlessly about not smoking. It's like people telling me how stupid and dangerous riding a motorcycle is.

I feel sorry for all the people that are trying to quit by using the e-cigarettes. The politicians are treating them the same as cigarette smokers - banning the use in a lot of places. Seems you just can't win nowdays.

GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE WHO IS TRYING TO QUITE!!!

I sat down and figured out what I was spending each month Swisher Sweet Tip cigarellos and realized It would make the monthly payment on a new Goldwing. Haven't smoked one since. I love my new Wing.

Good for you Jim, I'm pulling for you to keep up the good work. I also smoked 2 packs a day and now that was 36 years ago. What I credit for my success was a friend of mine quit and gained over 40 lbs. SO......when I quit I also needed to loose weight so I went on a diet at the same time. I believe my mind was more on the diet and stopped smoking easier than I thought.

I was up to 3 packs a day [Luckys] Went cold turkey back in 1970, Don't know why I just woke up one day and decided to quit. But still to this day I have to fight the urge every time someone lights up near me.
Especially when at a stop light and someone in a car in front is smoking 'and the tobacco smoke drifts back...

OH COME ON PEOPLE!!!!
before today the last comment was made 2 years & 9 months ago and don't be surprised if Jim/pasadenajim does not reply to you, since he hasn't posted since Sept of 2011!!!!!

While I'm glad you all have kicked or are kicking the smoking habit, I just don't get digging up such old threads!
Feel free to ignore, I'll say no more, just a pet peeve.:D

Sensen was anice, the same flavoring in black licorice. can buy it in the spice aisle.
Grows wild on ditch banks in some parts of the country.

:Agree: I quit 14 years ago, if I could only get the wife to quit I would be able to breath cleaner air and still not smell like I do. The worst to kick was the snuff, still get a hankering when someone cracks open a fresh can of Cope, I can do without the smokes, can't stand the smell of them now.
