Slipons for my 2012 Trike

I have a 2012 Harley trike and looking for some slip-ons. The more I research the more confused I get. I would like to pickup a little horsepower and a deeper growl. Any input or suggestions would be appreciated. :D

I put Vance & Hines "Classic Slip-Ons" on my 2012. These have a slash-cut end with chrome billet end caps. Although designed for pre-09 bikes (without a cat), they bolt right up and have a very deep, throaty rumble. I'm very happy with them. You can get them on that well-known auction site for $250 with free shipping.

I bought a set of H-D Fatshotz slip ons. Dealer had a good deal on them. Haven't read anything bad about them on any Harley forum - nothing but good reviews.
Dealer had a bike with them on in their shop. Sounded real nice - just a wee bit louder then stock - deep rumble. They are stamped EPA certified - so they are legal. They look cool too - nothing like your run-of-the-mill pipes.

I like Vance and Hines but my model is the Deluxe ones. The way they mount you get a little bit of extra clearance and all the other things you are looking for also.

A lot of good info guys, I am leaning towards the "oval" style...for the appearance and additional road clearance... I do have the lift kit installed on it..so I should be ok with clearance... the Vance and Hines are definitely on my radar, but want to see what all is out there and hear what everyone here thinks...I do lean towards the louder exhaust as long as it is legal...

Any idea what the dealership charges for installation?

I have the Vance and Hines slash cut 4" diameter. I like them, they are louder than the stock ones. Some of the guys around here have used Rush. The Rush you can get different diameter insides with a 4" outside diameter. Some of the Harley dealers handle the Rush. As for installing them, that is very easy to do yourself.

I like the looks of these, JohnC...

We put Rush slip-ons on the 09, and Reinhardts on the 11. Neither required any major fuel management changes, only a re-map. Both have a deeper rumble without being obnoxious.

Besides installing the slip-ons is there anything else I need to do?

My understanding is as follows:

  • Muffler change, stock header, stock air cleaner - ECM recalibration / remap not needed.
  • Muffler change, new performance header, stock air cleaner - ECM recalibration / remap not needed but suggested.
  • Muffler change, new performance header, high-flow air cleaner - ECM recalibration / remap required.

:Agree: You are correct.

My 2cents
If you like loud - get Rhinharts - obnoxiously loud - I won't ride anywhere near someone with them on.

Dealer install cost - don't know since the dealer installed my H-D Fatshotz for free. They are completely tuneable.

As someone earlier said - install yourself - very very easy - if you have the tools and room.

Keep your original pipes for when the government decides to really crack down on illegal ones.

I don't think oval mufflers will look very good under round cutouts.

If I didn't have the Fatshotz, I would go with the V&H - I like the distinctive looks better. Don't know how they sound since no one in my chapter has a set.
I'll assume they sound like any other aftermarket pipe.
Only a few in my chapter have Rhineharts, but a lot either have stock pipes or any one of the Screaming Eagles sets.

Good point on the round cut outs Gary. I am going to my HD dealer Friday and see what they have to offer, and pick there brains.

Right now I am leaning towards the V&H... with a bad back and knees not sure I can handle the installation, although it looks rather simple assuming the old ones come off easily. With 3,000 miles on the trike they should come off ok.

I have a set of Bub-7's on my 2010 Triglide and I think it sounds good. Was told by my dealer they were the loudest I could go before getting a ticket and that would pass inspection.

Hi Thomkm, I have a 2011 HD Triglide. I put 4 inch oval RhineHearts on my trike. I also have a lift kit in it and have plenty of road clearence. The sound is not real loud but it is a throaty deep sound. I love the sound of it. You wouldnt go wrong and they went on real easy. Later Kraxyi

Somewhat new to this trike game. Was traditionally a two-wheel rider. Purchased my 2012 Tri-glide this past July. In South central Texas the summers are brutal! Brings an entire new meaning to the word overheating. Getting ready for Jackpot header, SE stage1 AC, Super Pro tuner and increased flow mufflers. My question concerns 3-1/2" versus 4" mufflers. Is there any problems with 4" Reinharts/Vance&Hines clearing the cutouts after installation? Would hate to find a problem after purchasing. Thanks in advance for any replies.

I love my Super Trapp Stouts 4 inch..Nice deep sound ..Not loud at all..

Good Luck!!

I'm runnin' darn near the same thing. Kerker Slip-Ons so I could get a little crazy with the end caps as shown here:

Immediately after installation in my garage the sound was not far off from the OEM pipes but obviously louder (I can e-mail you video's). As I have put the few miles on them I have since I installed them they have definitely gotten louder, and more gnarly sounding, and this increases in both respects each time I take it out. I bought these online from Direct Harley Parts and installed them myself. The price was right and shipping was fast.

I have photos on this forum showing the complete install here:

There is another good thread on the muffler subject here:

Now don't let those install photos scare you. Most of that is for the lift kit I installed at the same time (well, the primary work being done).

I am 49, and while rolling around on a garage floor may not sound too bad, I was bruised up pretty good and sore a couple days after. A lift would be real nice.

Search You Tube. There are a lot of muffler videos out there. Only a couple for Trikes but enough FLHT's to give you a pretty good idea of what each brand sounds like.

Next step for me is to remove the OEM header and replace it with a gutted version wrapped with header tape, install a high flow intake (probably a A.N. Big Sucker) and a tuner (TTS probably). Once that is done I think the sound will be at the limit I want it at, hopefully.

Like you my friend, I like em' loud.

I have Vance & Hines Classic Slip-Ons installed on my 2012 TG. These mufflers are actually designed for the older, pre-cat bikes but they bolted right up to my fuelmoto header. They have 4-inch bodies with billet-chrome end caps and there were absolutely no clearance issues. I could not be happier with them.

I brought my '09 Tri-Glide to central Florida for the winter. MSocko3 recommended I go to Doc's Performance Tuning in Minneola, FL. I was there Tuesday and left with Rush "Big Louie" slip ons, an Arlen Ness "Big Sucker" air cleaner and a TTS Master Tune module.
I'm new to riding, but I have to say it's like a whole new bike. Seems lighter, more torque, runs out very nicely and sounds wonderful. Rumbly, but not crazy.
I couldn't be happier.
