Reverse

Having only put 100 miles on the trike last year and reading the threads over winter, I'd like to ask this: Does anyone use their reverse everyday and are you worried about burning up the starter/reverse motor? I'm a little concerned because I"ll have to use it every time I park it in the garage. Just don't feel like the starter was made to be used as reverse (it's an '08 1800 w/CSC conversion).
Thanks in advanced & no the wife hasn't kicked me out yet!!!

biddle, we too use the reverse to get out of the garage, as well as out of parking places. Ours is an 08 GW1800 CSC also - no problems at all that we know about, and John (or both of us) take the trike out 3 - 4 times a week for the past 2-1/2 years.

I have a 2005 Goldwing trike with a California sidecar conversion. I have 45000
miles on it and use the reverse more times than anyone can think about. I back it out of the garage every time I ride it and I almost live on the trike all spring summer and fall. I have had no problems with the reverse motor on my trike.

Isn't the reverse motor on your Goldwing the starter motor??

Mine is a 2006 GL1800 Roadsmith. I use the reverse to get out of the garage every time I ride and at least once a day to get out of a parking space.. ZERO problems! Just don't try to reverse up a steep slope and you'll be just fine. If I recall correctly, the instructions advise not to use the reverse for more than a minute at a time.

I use the HECK out of the Reverse... I might use it 3 or 4 times per ride but I do use it everyday or every time I ride.. granted mines a 2012 but I have put over 5k on her so far! ThumbUp

i have an '08 GL 1800, I also use the reverse to get out of the garage every time I ride. No problems so far. Konrad is correct about the instructions. The reason for that is that the reverse function is accomplished by means of a gear wheel that is attached to the starter motor. When you are going in reverse, you are actually running off of the battery, not the engine. If you reverse too far at one time you will run down the battery. Also, there is a safety feature built into it so if you try to reverse either up or down at too steep an angle, it will cut out. That's because the gear/motor combination is not heavy-duty enough to hold the weight of the trike against the pull of gravity. It is really intended for level (or very close to level) surface reversing only.

Excellent explanation - and another reason to get a VERY good Battery!

I always try my feet first, since if it easy to back up with my legs, then why put wear and tear on the motor. You'd be suprised how many times it is easy compared to a 2 wheeler. The trike is lower because of the rake kit and I've notice even in a level garage it is much easier to use my legs to back out than it was on 2 wheels since I can get my feet on the ground better. Being of long legs probably wouldn't make much difference.

Aqua shields sort of get in the way of that method.

You can also grab the front forks and push. It won't fall over and you can also steer it. Just watch it doesn't roll away from you. Always use creative parking so you can roll forward or reverse. Greg

I use to use my reverse all the time. But twice my starter wouldn't disengage.
Even with the key and kill switch off.Had to pull batterie cable off.and disconnect reverse solenoid. Contacts stuck closed.Had to replace it.Not an easy job.Now I use it sperringly .Remember if it happens to you.Pull the cable off.:AGGHH:
