Reverse gear for most trikes

While building my Honda Fury trike I might have had the roof welded up but the reverse system had me divided. Being shaft drive to a stock straight Ford axle I was reluctant to add weight forward of that axle as I'd already achieved 185kg on the front wheel downforce. If anything I wanted less. A solid ring gear and starter motor weighs around 18kg.

A mechanism at the rear would need to be 12 volts. Although it wouldn't be used often regulations here in Australia stipulate any trike over 450kg needs to be "capable of being propelled rearward". So, the hunt was on.

I settled on a GEN2 caravan mover mated to a 12v scizzor jack. Later after 2 Jack failures I replaced it with a trailer drawbar jack, much more robust but higher. On/off/one switches at extremities stop it from over riding settings. Warning lights prevent the same.

Advantages- behind the axle lowers front wheel downforce. Can use it to move forwards and backwards. Can lift both rear wheels to allow wheel change eliminating a car jack.
Disadvantages- slow about 20-26 seconds to lower it and 22 feet/minute travel. Not suitable for over 8 degree inclines. Not waterproof so electrical connections etc should have silicone sealant and unit boxed in to prevent rain.

I've got this youtube video I made.
