Rear Brake Switch went out.......

I ride a 2016 TG.............at 27,900 miles the red ignition light came on during a short ride....then it went off.....Next ride it came on again and stayed on this time (rear brake lights stayed on too)...........Took to HD dealer yesterday and they warranty replaced the switch......

......because I have recently been reading some chatter on trike talk about these 2017-2018 M8 engines having problems about transmission oil transferring into the primary chamber, I asked a dealer mechanic in the shop, "WHAT-UP with this?" ..........

He said, "Yep, we've had a quite a few complaints about it and Harley has a fix kit which is basically a plastic shield (I think that's what he described the kit as being.....I haven't seen it so I don't actually know myself)"

..........He continued to say, "I just finished putting a fix kit for this problem in a bike about an hour before you got here.......I said. "WHOA! Seems like there's somethin' happenin' here with this issue and the M8 models!!!!!!"

....just thought I'd mention this stuff "For What It's Worth!" (Music) :D Whoo-ah!

.............................................(all you old Hippies out there know that's the name of a famous old pop song)

Cheers!

Yea, Its a song by Buffalo Springfield.....Its about a curfew put on a night club....

And it was used in Forrest Gump...But it had nothing to do with Nam..

reply

Nope......1966......Sunset strip California night club riots.....

But it does fit the 1968 Chicago..Democratic Convention...Or even Nam especially being used in Forrest Gump...

.....I always remembered the song a protest song (yes, I did say "remembered!").....I thought it was '67 or '68......Those days everybody was bitchen'-bout something!....Kent State shooting, Pot, Nam War, Civil Rights...always something!!!!!!

....So'z I went and looked it up!

.....Turns out rino2 is 100% correct!!!!!! It WAS about night club riots on the Sunset Strip.......seems as though Buffalo Springfield had become a house band at a place called "Whiskey-Go-Go" on The Strip..........Store owners and businesses became so annoyed with the young crowds and congestion that they got City Hall to pass a curfew and stop the traffic congestion and put an end to the crowd gatherings and loitering..............The young crowds reacted with RIOTS as they felt their civil rights had been violated!!!! .....And so came the song.

(I think rino2 cheated and looked it up = just kidding!):D:D:D

....anyway my grand kids have asked me what it was like back in those mid to late 60's days when they see old film clips of the era showing the civil unrest of the times.......I now tell them "Hold on a bit - I think you got a good chance of seein' it for yourself soon enough if things keep goin' the way they are!!!!!" ....These are approaching some pretty scary times too, me thinks.

...Oh well, joined this site to learn info about my Harley AND got some schoolin' bout' a favorite old song of mine too! ....Very cool!

Thanks!

And if Born in the USA, Is a favorite also......That also was protest song by ultra liberal [rich] Springsteen....Has nothing to do with patriotism......

Sorry to hear about your brake switch, it is always something going on with the bikes.

As far as the M8 problems with the trannie oil going into the primary, it has been happening on the 2014 and up, seems like you hear more about the M8 but it is happening with the twin cams on the 2014 and up. My cousin's did this when he was out west on vacation with a group of other bikes, he ended up draining out a quart of primary oil and then filling his trannie up in the morning's until he got home, he then went and traded his 2014 harley trike for a 2017 and so far he has over 5,000 miles on it and no problems so to speak that I know of. I can't tell you how many miles he had on his 2014 but he wasn't happy about it.

All for now Trampas

....I'd get rid of that 2014 too if I couldn't get it fixed!!!..................I got the impression, from the HD mechanic I was talking to, that he was "NOT" very impressed with the Harley fix kit, but we didn't continue that part of our conversation.........................I wonder if other motorcycle mfg brands have this same "Trannie juice transfer to primary" problem, or is this problem unique to Harley?

Cheers!

Here is the 'fix' he was talking about: Transmission Oil Deflector Kit, p/n 36300028, 01/31/2018

I have a PDF of the instructions but can't attach as it exceeds the maximum size allowed. If anyone would like a copy PM me with your email address and I'll send it to you.

BTW on another forum just a couple days ago I read of another 'fix' that is supposed to solve the oil migration problem - drilling a hole in the primary cover and adding a vent. Don't know if its just an open vent of if there is a one way valve but according to several folks who claim to 'be in the know' the 2019 models will come with this vent from the factory and others can be retrofitted if oil migration is a problem. Several folks (myself included) are a bit skeptical to say the least about this but we'll see I guess.

Hey Jerry!

....No need to send PDF as I took your part number and googled the kit on web....saw the instructions and diagram = man, looks like a cheesy plastic cap to me (guess its basically the same fix on older kit models too)...If it works, then it works, I guess! But, I do wonder exactly "where" they say to drill a vent hole at on the primary cover????

....a couple of months ago I was changing primary oil on my 2016 and had the Derby cover off..........so just to see what would happen, I cranked engine for a moment with the Derby cover still off................Wow! It was like there was a hurricane inside that primary and oil spadder-flew out with a greatness!!!!! (won't do that again)

...I'm mentioning this because even with the motor idling, there must be some low amount of pressure inside the primary ......so, it would seem to me that if you vented the cover = it would allow fluid in the transmission to transfer even faster to the primary area?

.....Obviously I am missing something or not understanding something?

..............I don't have this problem now (at least I "THINK" I don't have it yet).....but this really "has me scratchen'?" :xzqxz:

Thanks dude!

From everything I've read a lot of people are scratching their heads trying to figure this oil migration out. It would see you need a vacuum in the primary area in order to transfer fluid from the tranny into it. No idea about the vent as I just learned of it. I'm sure we will hear and see more about this if in fact the 2019 motors do come from the factory with the vent. Stay tuned!

Yep!....That's about what it was like! ........even though the engine was at Idle (and only a 2-3 seconds) = Very Exciting! (but not one of my best executive decision moments)

Cheers!
