Quieter Exhaust

My wife has a 2008 Honda VTX-1300 Motor Trike. We would like to change the mufflers to make it quieter. I contacted Motor Trike and they said her trike had a Cycle Shack exhaust system on it. They don't have any suggestions as to how to make it quieter. I would like to be buy new mufflers to replace what is on it now. Do any of you have any ideas of what type of muffler I may be able to use. The muffllers are side by side now and almost touching each other. I haven't measured them yet but they are probably about 3 inches in diameter.

Thanks

Why don't you PM our member/sponsor "Bazooka". He is a trike builder and motortrike dealer (as well as a heck of a great guy---but don't tell him I said that!). He may well have some experience with the options available to fit your wife's trike.

I got pulled over today by our local police because they feel my new trike is to loud and informed me I had to get it quieted down. I believe it is the stock exhaust for a Runabout with a VW 1600 engine. What are my options?

Hi teri-
My suggestion would be to put a set of slip-on mufflers off a stock bike. Something fairly compact like a set of Sportster "shorty" mufflers. You can pick them up cheap to free as so many people discard them after changing theirs to a louder system. Your local Harley shop might have a set they would give you or know someone who does have. If you have any fitment issues a good muffler shop can help you get them mounted and aligned with no problem and most are reasonable. If that doesnt work for you check with a local bike shop and browse through a Parts Unlimited or J&P Cycles catalog and order what you need.

acmeactor, It's hard to advise you because I cannot see the rear of your trike in the picture on your intro thread. But if it is a standard VW exhaust layout, you should be able to go to the Custom VW venders and get an exhaust that would be more acceptable. When I was into VW's they had some that sounded like a Porsche.

Don't know if its too late but I had the same cycle shack mufflers and they were deafening. Bought a set of Harley Dyna stockers from a guy for $50. Had to cut the longer cycle shack muffler (one is short the other long) and use that cut off section as an attachment to one of the new Dyna mufflers. My VTX now is much quieter and never backfires like it used to do on occasion.

Not sure where you're located but I have the Original Exhaust off my old '04 Kawasaki 1500 Vulcan and you're welcome to the mufflers. Just PM me and we can set-up getting them to you.
