Went out on I80, slow mountain grades, ugh 400sbc, having issues pulling the 24 foot box to 65 , 55 average. It was some strong head winds. Added a hour to trip, traffic and slow poke combined.

looking into front spoiler , air dam for trailer first, before updating power plant. Gonna also check fule pump keeping up to demand.
Anyone put a air dam on, and benefit?

Those 400's werent much . Whats your rearend gearing ? Possibly a good RV cam and new fuel distribution would help also like a good tunable EFI system. I have a 2015 gmc 2500 with a 6 speed trans and a 6.0 and although I can to 80 easy pulling 28 foot if I want the millage still sucks. Its nature of the beast . I towed down to Ohio and back last week and it ranged from 7 to close to 9 mpg with speeds from 69 to 72. I guess I could slow down ;) That would help the mileage. Ever think of swapping to an LS ? At some point it makes sense to do an engine upgrade. I widh now id have waited a bit and tried to find a good used 3/4 ton with an LS without having to get a job ;)

400,slight cam, but I never figured out, if it's a towing or car cam.
Airgap, holley 700, blockhugger headers, 400 turbo, 3.07 gears with I think 27" tires, they used to be 31 tall, it was killing me on hills, barely making some in 1st, now 1st gear on hills can keep rpm up. (322 state college hill) 6 percent hill I believe.

How's your trailer nose? Mine, 86 square body, yanking flat front, with round corners.

3.07 gears towing? Shouldn't you have at least 3.42 or better yet 3.73?
Mine has 4.11 gears but all my other trucks had 3.37 . The 3.07 seem pretty high . I have a Forest River fsx which has a rounded front but its still a box behind a pickup . Like I said my mileage sucks but it pulls great in fact even being bumper pull and fully loaded with the FW in the back I forget its there at times !

400 turbo, no overdrive, I was going to jump gears ratios up to 3.50 or 3.73 but shortening tire high was easier.
With the older tires, 2cd gear was hitting 55 or 60 before going into 3rd.

A 4el80 would help , then gear it. I also have 8.1 merc boat, excellent condition. That's my choice after, if a good airdam on trailer doesn't help. I'll be measuring cam, after I get home next week, just to see what lift I'm running, ratio rockers might be the easy fix
I don't want a 8 hour Maggie valley trip, costing me 12 hours each way
