Howdy folks. Bear is the name. New to tikes, but not bikes. Been riding for forty years more or less. Most of that hard core. Didn't even have a car for several years.
Was sidelined for the last seven years following a major wreck in which I lost my left leg and most of the use of my right one. Tried like hell to listen to all the people (Doctors and people who have never ridden) who told me I was nuts to ever consider riding again. Well, I guess I am as crazy as they say, because I just couldn't get it out of my system.
Last August I was at the dealership the day Harley released their new models. I could have bought a 2012 model but decided to wait to see what the 2013's would be like. Didn't really like the '12 colors all that much. Well, as it turns out I didn't see anything new and revolutionary about the new trikes either till they started talking about the 110th anniversary models. So, seeing as this will probably be the last new bike I buy, why not shoot the works? At the same time I ordered my new Tri-Glide I bought my twenty year old son a 2012 Harley Fat Bob. I figured it would be nice to ride with someone I trust till I get used to being back in the saddle again. He's been a godsend in taking care of me when I got out of the hospital and I can't think of a better person to hit the road with. Besides, the look on the salesman's face was priceless when he asked How I was going to finance the two bikes. I said "cash money son" and whipped out $60k.
I ordered it August 28th, 2012. It came in on October 27th. I had to do some mods to move all the foot controls to the handlebars and find a fabricator to cobble up a wheelchair rack (my design - I'm a retired design engineer for Ford Motor company). Since I had to order the hand controls and since winter dosen't afford much riding time here in Michigan I just left the trike in storage until now. Now I'm just waiting for a table to open up at the fabrication shop. In a week or two I should be on the road.
Hopefully I will find the opportunity to meet up with and ride with some of you good folks. I've been a member and contributor to one other cycle related forum and have nearly seven thousand posts there. I've made a few contacts there who have become close personal friends. Hopefully the same will happen here.
I encourage anyone in my part of the country to make yourselves known in the hopes that one day soon we may find ourselves meeting up for a ride. As for those in other parts of our great riding nation, well, you never know where I'm liable to show up.
See you down the road...
