Need compact camera recommendations

Can somebody recommend a good compact digital camera? One that's small and light, but that also allows some creative control (aperture, shutter speed, ISO)? And that also will fit into a jacket pocket when riding?

I LOVE to take photos, and I really love taking photos on our rides. Or at least I would love to take photos on our rides; but my camera is a big Canon DSLR, which is wonderful for allowing me lots of creative control over light and depth of field and capturing or stopping motion and all sorts of things like that, but is not so good for stuffing into a jacket pocket or windshield bag for the quick, easy, but fun shots that I want to take to document our rides.

So I need a camera that is a nice middle ground between big-bulky-but-versatile and small-light-but-not-much-more-than-a-point-and-shoot. I want a decent number of megapixels, so shots can be enlarged without loss of quality, and a nice wide-angle lens with also a zoom of at least 7x would be nice. So...any ideas?

Thanks, Maryland. The Lumix line is one I'm interested in. Great minds think alike!!!

I'm also hoping to hear from folks who have compact cameras that they use and like.

I've used a lot of brands, including Nikon, Panasonic, Kodak and others, but for my personal use, the best I've found is the Canon SD EPLH series. The lens is sharp, the color rendition is pure and the recovery time between shots is good.

My main considerations other than the above were size (it had to fit in my pocket, thin and flat on all sides when off), 3" screen (viewfinder is useless on trike), IS (for obvious reasons) and highest optical zoom possible and all metal case (plastic ain't for bikers).

I personally don't place a high priory on megapixels for my pocket camera, primarily because I never print 8x10s and rarely even 5x7s. I am currently at 7mp and it is excellent.

All that said, my daughter has a 14mp Lumix and it does a nice job as well! The only thing I envy a bit is the 10x optical zoom, but I question whether that is even usable while riding and the price differential is not worth it to me.

Good luck!

(BTW, you do realize this is about like trike brands don't you? You'll get many opinions, but you have to go with what is right for you. There's really no wrong answer.)

Took over 8000 pictures last August on one of our 'big trips' with a little Nikon point-&-shoot - easy to hold, great definition and color. John added an adjustable wrist strap from one of our Wii controllers so it wouldn't slide off my arm by accident . . . :yes:

juju;
I use a HP Photosmart 8mp and I think it does a comendable job and comes with wrist strap, also uses a sd card which go up to 32 gb so it holds tons of pics for the rides

I travel extensively for fun and work and started carrying a Fuji Finepix Z. It allows all sorts of manual settings when I am in the mood. Great for someone used to film and darkrooms. I got sick of TSA clowns that didn't understand what "cumulative damage" meant for x-rays on film.
